What it actually does

Race condition in jbd2 checkpoint handling allows journal head removal from trans1 checkpoint list without checking jh->b_transaction after buffer dirty state changes and cache shrink, orphaning uncommitted metadata from trans2 that is lost on power cut and causes ext4 image corruption on next mount.

How an attack unfolds

Local attacker performs sequenced journal commit, write access, cache drop, and power interruption to exploit the missing transaction check during checkpoint removal; threat actors including VMSCAPE and campaigns around related container privilege-escalation CVEs may chain this to achieve corruption or denial of service on container-optimized OS kernels.

How to fix it

Update to fixed kernel versions including 5.15.132 for mainline and 5.10.46-1 for Debian 11-14 packages; apply commit ef5fea70e5915afd64182d155e72bfb4f275e1fc from stable git trees.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm running kernel reports the fixed version string, run fstests or journal stress workloads with simulated power loss, and verify no corruption on remount.

Typical attack path

1. Obtain local or container access on affected kernel
2. Trigger jbd2_journal_commit_transaction to place jh on checkpoint list
3. Perform do_get_write_access and __jbd2_journal_file_buffer to move jh to new transaction
4. Invoke journal_shrink_one_cp_list and jbd2_journal_try_remove_checkpoint without buffer lock contention
5. Force power cut before trans2 commits
6. Observe corruption on subsequent mount and jbd2_cleanup_journal_tail

How to detect it

Search system logs for ext4 journal errors, unexpected checkpoint removals, or corruption messages following power events; correlate with container or local process activity that manipulates buffers and caches.
