What it actually does
Unchecked user-supplied rule_cnt value determines allocation size for rules buffer in mvpp2_ethtool_get_rxnfc, enabling out-of-bounds write or NULL pointer dereference when rule_cnt exceeds expected bounds.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers with local access can crash systems or potentially escalate privileges on affected Linux kernels used in networking appliances and servers, increasing downtime and remediation costs especially in high-prevalence Debian environments.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker invokes ethtool with a crafted ETHTOOL_GRXCLSRLALL command supplying an oversized rule_cnt, bypassing the missing validation in mvpp2_main and triggering memory corruption during rules population.
How to fix it
Upgrade linux packages to fixed versions such as 5.10.84-1 on Debian 11, 5.15.5-1 on Debian 12/13/14, or kernel commit ba6673824efa3dc198b04a54e69dce480066d7d9 in stable git trees.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify running kernel version against the listed fixed releases and confirm mvpp2_ethtool_get_rxnfc contains the rule_cnt bounds check before buffer use.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local access on a system running an affected Linux kernel with mvpp2 driver
- Prepare ethtool command with malicious rule_cnt value larger than allocated buffer
- Invoke the get_rxnfc path through ETHTOOL_GRXCLSRLALL ioctl
- Trigger OOB write or dereference leading to kernel panic or code execution
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for mvpp2_ethtool_get_rxnfc related oops or warnings, and inspect ethtool command traces from user space processes attempting RXNFC operations; correlate with threat actor TTPs from groups like VMSCAPE if observed in container environments.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching systems exposing mvpp2 interfaces within CISA-style timelines even without KEV listing
- Restrict unprivileged ethtool access via capabilities or SELinux policies until upgrades complete
- Monitor for downstream dependent package updates given high ecosystem prevalence of linux kernel
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: ethernet: mvpp2_main: fix possible OOB write in mvpp2_ethtool_get_rxnfc() rules is allocated in ethtool_get_rxnfc and the size is determined by rule_cnt from user space. So rule_cnt needs to be check before using rules to avoid OOB writing or NULL pointer dereference.
