What it actually does

Mismatched stack canary values between callers of boot_init_stack_canary and the function itself trigger __stack_chk_fail() followed by kernel panic during early boot when stack protectors are active.

Why it matters to the business

Early-boot crashes cause denial of service and system downtime on affected Linux kernels; low EPSS and absence from KEV indicate limited real-world exploitation urgency despite 394 days of exposure.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker triggers the vulnerable code path during kernel initialization by ensuring a caller compiled without -fno-stack-protector invokes boot_init_stack_canary, producing a canary mismatch that forces a panic; unrelated references to VMSCAPE and other CVEs appear in threat reporting but lack confirmed linkage.

How to fix it

Apply the upstream fix at commit 25e73018b4093e0cfbcec5dc4a4bb86d0b69ed56 or upgrade libvncserver packages on Debian 11-14 to 0.9.13+dfsg-1; rebuild kernels with the __no_stack_protector attribute on boot_init_stack_canary callers.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm presence of the __no_stack_protector attribute on relevant functions and verify the fixed commit hash in the running kernel source; test boot under gcc-11+ and clang configurations that enable stack protectors.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain code execution or control over early-boot compilation flags
  2. Invoke a caller of boot_init_stack_canary without the no_stack_protector attribute
  3. Trigger stack-protector check failure leading to __stack_chk_fail and panic

How to detect it

Search kernel boot and panic logs for __stack_chk_fail calls originating from early initialization routines; correlate with compiler version and absence of the protective attribute.

  • __stack_chk_fail
  • boot_init_stack_canary
  • start_kernel

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel updates on all production systems within standard change windows given low EPSS
  • Monitor boot logs for stack-protector panics as an interim detection measure
  • Audit custom kernel builds for missing no_stack_protector attributes

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: start_kernel: Add __no_stack_protector function attribute Back during the discussion of commit a9a3ed1eff36 ("x86: Fix early boot crash on gcc-10, third try") we discussed the need for a function attribute to control the omission of stack protectors on a per-function basis; at the time Clang had support for no_stack_protector but GCC did not. This was fixed in gcc-11. Now that the function attribute is available, let's start using it. Callers of boot_init_stack_canary need to use this function attribute unless they're compiled with -fno-stack-protector, otherwise the canary stored in the stack slot of the caller will differ upon the call to boot_init_stack_canary. This will lead to a call to __stack_chk_fail() then panic.
