What it actually does
Unchecked return value from devm_kzalloc() in ACPI processor fch_misc_setup() allows clk_data->name to be NULL, resulting in a NULL pointer dereference and kernel memory corruption.
Why it matters to the business
Systems may experience unexpected crashes or instability during boot or ACPI initialization, leading to downtime and requiring manual intervention to recover affected Linux deployments.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access or the ability to influence kernel memory allocation during ACPI processor initialization can force devm_kzalloc() to fail, triggering the NULL dereference when the driver later accesses the uninitialized name field.
How to fix it
Update to fixed kernel versions containing commit 79ca94bc3e8cc3befa883c7d30b30a27ef0ea386 or DPDK packages 19.11.5-1 and later on all affected Debian releases.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the running kernel contains commit 79ca94bc3e8cc3befa883c7d30b30a27ef0ea386 or confirm DPDK package version is at least 19.11.5-1; recompile or reboot with the updated kernel and confirm no NULL dereference occurs under memory pressure during ACPI setup.
Typical attack path
- Trigger ACPI processor initialization path in the kernel
- Exhaust or contend for kernel memory so devm_kzalloc() returns NULL
- Allow subsequent code to dereference the NULL clk_data->name pointer
- Cause kernel panic or memory corruption
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for NULL pointer dereference messages referencing fch_misc_setup or ACPI processor; inspect dmesg and syslog around boot or ACPI initialization events for oops or panic entries.
- fch_misc_setup
- clk_data->name
- devm_kzalloc.*NULL
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel and DPDK updates on all production systems within the next maintenance window
- Monitor EPSS trend and any new exploit maturity reports for increased urgency
- Add memory-pressure testing to CI pipelines that exercise ACPI initialization paths
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ACPI: processor: Check for null return of devm_kzalloc() in fch_misc_setup() devm_kzalloc() may fail, clk_data->name might be NULL and will cause a NULL pointer dereference later. [ rjw: Subject and changelog edits ]
