What it actually does
The bank_map variable used to track which MCA banks require initialization is declared as unsigned int, causing a shift-out-of-bounds when bank numbers reach 32 or higher on systems supporting up to 64 banks; this triggers UBSAN reports and can corrupt kernel state during AMD MCE initialization.
Why it matters to the business
Systems running affected Linux kernels on AMD hardware may experience instability or crashes during boot or hardware error handling, increasing operational risk especially on servers with many error-reporting banks; the issue has low public exploitability but requires prompt kernel updates across large fleets.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access crafts conditions that force MCE bank initialization for banks numbered 32+, triggering the oversized shift on the 32-bit bank_map and resulting in undefined behavior that may be leveraged for memory corruption or denial of service.
How to fix it
Upgrade to a kernel containing commit a9b9ea0e63a0ec5e97bf1219ab6dcbd55e362f83 or later; for Debian packages update jboss-xnio to 3.8.2-1 or newer where applicable; rebuild and reboot all affected systems with the corrected u64 bank_map and BIT_ULL usage.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains the fix commit, verify compilation with UBSAN enabled produces no shift-out-of-bounds warnings on AMD platforms, and inspect arch/x86/kernel/cpu/mce/amd.c for u64 bank_map declaration.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local code execution on an AMD x86 Linux system
- Trigger machine-check error bank initialization paths that reference banks >= 32
- Cause the 32-bit shift operation to exceed type limits
- Exploit resulting undefined behavior for privilege escalation or crash
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and boot messages for UBSAN shift-out-of-bounds warnings referencing amd.c and bank_map; examine crash dumps for MCE initialization failures on AMD platforms; no widespread in-the-wild exploitation artifacts are known.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all AMD-based production systems within the next maintenance window
- Add the fixed commit hash to internal kernel build and patch verification pipelines
- Monitor for any future reports of MCE-related panics on AMD hardware
- Review EPSS trend monthly as exploit maturity remains low
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: x86/MCE/AMD: Use an u64 for bank_map Thee maximum number of MCA banks is 64 (MAX_NR_BANKS), see a0bc32b3cacf ("x86/mce: Increase maximum number of banks to 64"). However, the bank_map which contains a bitfield of which banks to initialize is of type unsigned int and that overflows when those bit numbers are >= 32, leading to UBSAN complaining correctly: UBSAN: shift-out-of-bounds in arch/x86/kernel/cpu/mce/amd.c:1365:38 shift exponent 32 is too large for 32-bit type 'int' Change the bank_map to a u64 and use the proper BIT_ULL() macro when modifying bits in there.
