What it actually does

Incorrect unconditional call to amdgpu_irq_put for gfx9 cp_ecc_error_irq during gfx_v9_0_hw_fini when legacy gfx RAS is not enabled, producing a kernel call trace on suspend paths.

Why it matters to the business

Systems using affected AMD GPUs may log kernel warnings or experience instability during suspend, hibernate, or power-management events, increasing operational noise and potential for unexpected device behavior on Linux kernels.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local access triggers a suspend or freeze operation on a system with an affected AMD GPU; the unconditional interrupt disable in the hardware fini path executes amdgpu_irq_put without the required RAS condition, surfacing the call trace. No remote or privilege-escalation exploitation is indicated.

How to fix it

Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 625d4112ea25dbad7ddf749fd5c1287ceffb2339 or later; rebuild and deploy the fixed amdgpu module; test suspend/resume cycles on AMD gfx9 hardware.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the running kernel git commit is at or after 625d4112ea25dbad7ddf749fd5c1287ceffb2339; reproduce a suspend cycle and verify absence of the amdgpu_irq_put call trace in dmesg; inspect gfx_v9_0_hw_fini for the RAS conditional guard.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local shell or user context on Linux host with AMD GPU
  2. Initiate system suspend, hibernate, or container freeze
  3. Trigger gfx_v9_0_hw_fini path in amdgpu driver
  4. Observe unconditional amdgpu_irq_put call producing kernel trace

How to detect it

Review kernel logs (dmesg, journalctl) for the amdgpu_irq_put call trace originating from gfx_v9_0_hw_fini during suspend events; correlate with AMD GPU hardware presence and kernel version before the fix commit.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel upgrade to the fixed commit for all AMD gfx9 systems within standard change windows
  • Add kernel log monitoring for amdgpu_irq_put traces during maintenance cycles
  • Document affected kernel versions and schedule phased rollout based on GPU hardware inventory

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/amdgpu/gfx: disable gfx9 cp_ecc_error_irq only when enabling legacy gfx ras gfx9 cp_ecc_error_irq is only enabled when legacy gfx ras is assert. So in gfx_v9_0_hw_fini, interrupt disablement for cp_ecc_error_irq should be executed under such condition, otherwise, an amdgpu_irq_put calltrace will occur.
