What it actually does
Null pointer dereference in cx23885 buffer handling when dma_alloc_coherent fails inside cx23885_risc_buffer, leaving risc->cpu uninitialized so later buffer_prepare, buffer_finish, or free operations dereference a null pointer.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using cx23885-based video capture hardware can experience kernel crashes or denial of service triggered by normal media operations; the low EPSS and lack of KEV status indicate limited real-world exploitation risk, though the issue affects the upstream Linux kernel tree.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access triggers the media subsystem to allocate a buffer; the dma allocation fails, leaving an empty risc structure; subsequent buffer access or release paths then dereference the null cpu pointer, causing a kernel panic. The flaw is similar to a previously fixed media-stage bug and can be reached from user space.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to the commit f0a06203f2fe63f04311467200c99c4ee1926578 or later; Debian putty packages are listed with fixes in 0.74-1 but are unrelated to this kernel driver issue.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the presence of the fix commit in the running kernel source, verify that cx23885_risc_buffer return values and risc->cpu pointers are checked before use, and test buffer allocation failure paths with fault injection.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local access on a system with cx23885 hardware
- Invoke media or V4L2 operations that call buffer_prepare or buffer_finish
- Force or wait for dma_alloc_coherent failure inside cx23885_risc_buffer
- Trigger buffer free or further access to dereference the null risc->cpu pointer
- Cause kernel oops or panic
How to detect it
Inspect kernel logs for oops or panic messages referencing cx23885_risc_buffer, buffer_prepare, or buffer_finish; look for null pointer dereference traces in the media/cx23885 path.
What your security team should do
- Apply the referenced kernel commit or distribution update that contains f0a06203f2fe63f04311467200c99c4ee1926578
- Monitor for media driver oopses on systems with cx23885 hardware
- Prioritize patching if the hardware is in active use; otherwise treat as low urgency given EPSS and KEV status
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: media: cx23885: Fix a null-ptr-deref bug in buffer_prepare() and buffer_finish() When the driver calls cx23885_risc_buffer() to prepare the buffer, the function call dma_alloc_coherent may fail, resulting in a empty buffer risc->cpu. Later when we free the buffer or access the buffer, null ptr deref is triggered. This bug is similar to the following one: https://git.linuxtv.org/media_stage.git/commit/?id=2b064d91440b33fba5b452f2d1b31f13ae911d71. We believe the bug can be also dynamically triggered from user side. Similarly, we fix this by checking the return value of cx23885_risc_buffer() and the value of risc->cpu before buffer free.
