Schedule a fix SSVC: Track

A bug in the Linux kernel's network packet handling could cause crashes or warnings when certain mesh networking features are active, so systems should be updated to stay stable.

What it actually does

Incorrect skb_transport_offset usage in perf_trace_net_dev_start_xmit after a prior change allows out-of-bounds skb header access during trace event emission in the networking transmit path.

Why it matters to the business

Networking workloads or batman-adv mesh configurations may trigger kernel warnings, instability, or crashes; low exploitability reduces immediate risk but still requires patching to maintain system reliability across Linux deployments.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker sends crafted packets that exercise batadv_iv_ogm_emit paths; the resulting xmit trace event invokes skb_transport_offset without proper validation, surfacing a syzbot-detected warning that could be leveraged for further memory corruption if combined with other flaws.

How to fix it

Update the Linux kernel to commit ced61418f46993d571385812bafed3a7d4ab6918 or later stable releases containing the fix; apply vendor backports where available.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the patch is present by checking for the corrected skb_transport_offset guard in include/trace/events/net.h and include/linux/skbuff.h; re-run syzkaller-style reproducers or exercise batman-adv OGM transmission under tracing to verify absence of the warning.

Typical attack path

  1. Send network traffic that reaches dev_hard_start_xmit
  2. Trigger batadv_send_broadcast_skb via mesh routing
  3. Cause perf_trace_net_dev_start_xmit to call skb_transport_offset on an skb lacking a valid transport header
  4. Observe kernel warning or potential memory corruption

How to detect it

Review kernel logs for perf_trace_net_dev_start_xmit warnings or skb_transport_offset assertions; correlate with batadv_iv_ogm_emit call traces in dmesg or ftrace output.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel updates on systems using batman-adv or heavy network tracing
  • Monitor EPSS trend and re-evaluate if new threat actor activity emerges
  • Enable kernel panic_on_warn during testing to surface latent issues early
