What it actually does

Memory overwrite in the ASPEED video capture driver when processing 1600x900 resolution frames because the source buffer height is not aligned to the 8x8 macroblock size, leading to out-of-bounds writes under memory pressure.

Why it matters to the business

Systems using ASPEED-based graphics hardware can experience kernel crashes and service interruptions during video capture or KVM sessions at 1600x900 resolution when memory is constrained.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker configures a host display at 1600x900, mounts an ISO image through virtual media, runs continuous file checksum operations on the mounted media, then opens a KVM session to trigger the unaligned buffer condition and cause a crash.

How to fix it

Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 4c823e4027dd1d6e88c31028dec13dd19bc7b02d or later stable releases that enforce 8-pixel height alignment for source buffers in the aspeed driver.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the applied kernel contains the fix by checking the presence of the alignment logic for src-buf height in the aspeed video driver source, and test 1600x900 capture under memory pressure without crashes.

Typical attack path

  1. Set display resolution to 1600x900 on the target host
  2. Mount ISO image via virtual media interface
  3. Execute repeated file hashing or I/O workload on mounted media
  4. Initiate KVM or video capture session to trigger buffer handling
  5. Observe kernel crash due to memory overwrite

How to detect it

Review kernel logs for ASPEED driver crashes or oops during 1600x900 capture sessions; look for stack traces involving video buffer handling in media subsystems.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel updates on systems using ASPEED hardware that support video capture or KVM
  • Apply the fix from commit 4c823e4027dd1d6e88c31028dec13dd19bc7b02d across all affected stable branches
  • Monitor for similar buffer alignment issues in other media drivers during resolution-specific capture

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: media: aspeed: Fix memory overwrite if timing is 1600x900 When capturing 1600x900, system could crash when system memory usage is tight. The way to reproduce this issue: 1. Use 1600x900 to display on host 2. Mount ISO through 'Virtual media' on OpenBMC's web 3. Run script as below on host to do sha continuously #!/bin/bash while [ [1] ]; do find /media -type f -printf '"%h/%f"\n' | xargs sha256sum done 4. Open KVM on OpenBMC's web The size of macro block captured is 8x8. Therefore, we should make sure the height of src-buf is 8 aligned to fix this issue.
