What it actually does
The flaw causes a general protection fault (null pointer dereference) in nilfs_btree_insert when a corrupted nilfs2 image leads __nilfs_btree_get_block to return -ENOENT, which is misinterpreted as a successful lookup, allowing incomplete path data to be used during b-tree insert operations.
Why it matters to the business
Systems relying on nilfs2 may experience kernel crashes and denial of service during write operations on corrupted filesystem images, impacting stability and availability; low EPSS and lack of KEV listing indicate limited active exploitation but kernel filesystem code remains at risk across many deployments.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker supplies or induces a corrupted nilfs2 disk image; when the kernel performs write operations that invoke nilfs_btree_insert, the spurious -ENOENT error from block address conversion is mishandled, leading to invalid memory access and a crash. No named threat actors or ransomware campaigns are associated.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 3c2a2ff67d46106715c2132021b98bd057c27545 or later stable releases; for affected Android components update platform/system/libhwbinder to the fixed versions released 2021-08-01 in branches 8.1, 9, 10, and 11.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the running kernel contains the referenced commit or equivalent fix; test by attempting writes against intentionally corrupted nilfs2 images and confirm that -EINVAL is returned instead of triggering the fault.
Typical attack path
- Provide or mount a deliberately corrupted nilfs2 filesystem image
- Initiate file write operations that reach nilfs_write_begin and generic_perform_write
- Trigger nilfs_bmap_insert which calls nilfs_btree_insert with incomplete lookup data
- Cause kernel panic via null pointer dereference in b-tree node handling
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and crash reports for general protection faults or KASAN null-ptr-deref entries referencing nilfs_btree_insert, nilfs_btree_prepare_insert, or nilfs_bmap_do_insert during write paths on nilfs2 volumes.
- general protection fault.*nilfs_btree_insert
- KASAN: null-ptr-deref in range.*nilfs_btree
- RIP:.*nilfs_btree_prepare_insert
- nilfs_bmap_do_insert.*bmap.c
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on systems using nilfs2 filesystems
- Implement filesystem integrity checks before mounting untrusted images
- Monitor kernel logs for nilfs2 b-tree errors indicating corruption handling
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: nilfs2: fix general protection fault in nilfs_btree_insert() If nilfs2 reads a corrupted disk image and tries to reads a b-tree node block by calling __nilfs_btree_get_block() against an invalid virtual block address, it returns -ENOENT because conversion of the virtual block address to a disk block address fails. However, this return value is the same as the internal code that b-tree lookup routines return to indicate that the block being searched does not exist, so functions that operate on that b-tree may misbehave. When nilfs_btree_insert() receives this spurious 'not found' code from nilfs_btree_do_lookup(), it misunderstands that the 'not found' check was successful and continues the insert operation using incomplete lookup path data, causing the following crash: general protection fault, probably for non-canonical address 0xdffffc0000000005: 0000 [#1] PREEMPT SMP KASAN KASAN: null-ptr-deref in range [0x0000000000000028-0x000000000000002f] ... By returning -EINVAL, it propagates without glitches, and for all relevant b-tree operations, functions in the upper bmap layer output an error message indicating corrupted b-tree metadata via nilfs_bmap_convert_error(), and code -EIO will be eventually returned as it should be.
