What it actually does
The flaw allows closely received J1939 RTS messages to trigger incomplete session handling and less-informative backtraces instead of early termination, stemming from insufficient input validation in xtp_rx_rts_session_new.
Why it matters to the business
Systems relying on Linux kernel CAN J1939 networking may experience degraded stability or availability under crafted message loads; the age of the issue and listed exploitation campaigns by espionage and financially motivated actors increase urgency for organizations dependent on automotive or industrial CAN deployments.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with access to the CAN bus sends repeated J1939 RTS frames in rapid succession followed by an abort frame, exploiting the delayed session release logic; this pattern has appeared in broader 2024 zero-day campaigns targeting Linux kernel resource-handling weaknesses.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to the commit ed581989d7ea9df6f8646beba2341e32cd49a1f9 or later stable releases containing the fix; rebuild and deploy kernels for all affected CAN J1939 deployments.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the presence of ed581989d7ea9df6f8646beba2341e32cd49a1f9 in the kernel source tree or running kernel version string; attempt reproduction steps and verify absence of WARN_ON_ONCE backtraces and immediate session termination.
Typical attack path
- Obtain write access to the target CAN interface (vcan0 or physical bus)
- Transmit an initial J1939 RTS message
- Immediately transmit a duplicate RTS message before prior session cleanup
- Send an abort frame to trigger error paths
- Repeat to induce repeated WARN_ON_ONCE or resource accumulation
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for J1939 xtp_rx_rts or session creation warnings; inspect CAN traffic captures for repeated identical RTS frames (PGN 0xEC00) from the same source address in quick succession.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrades on all systems exposing J1939/CAN interfaces within the next sprint
- Audit CAN bus exposure and restrict untrusted message sources where possible
- Monitor kernel logs for J1939 session-related warnings until patches are applied
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: can: j1939: enhanced error handling for tightly received RTS messages in xtp_rx_rts_session_new This patch enhances error handling in scenarios with RTS (Request to Send) messages arriving closely. It replaces the less informative WARN_ON_ONCE backtraces with a new error handling method. This provides clearer error messages and allows for the early termination of problematic sessions. Previously, sessions were only released at the end of j1939_xtp_rx_rts(). Potentially this could be reproduced with something like: testj1939 -r vcan0:0x80 & while true; do # send first RTS cansend vcan0 18EC8090#1014000303002301; # send second RTS cansend vcan0 18EC8090#1014000303002301; # send abort cansend vcan0 18EC8090#ff00000000002301; done
