A small oversight in low-level code that protects virtual machines could let an attacker peek at values that should have been hidden, so the code needs a quick update.

What it actually does
Missing xor of RSI register in TDX_HYPERCALL asm macro after TDCALL allows untrusted VMM-supplied values to remain in a register that should have been cleared before return to the guest.
Why it matters to the business
Organizations running TDX-protected Linux guests face a small risk of register-value leakage through speculative execution paths, which could aid further attacks in high-security confidential-computing deployments.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with control of the untrusted VMM supplies a chosen value in RSI before the TDCALL; after the hypercall returns the value is not cleared, allowing speculative execution gadgets inside the guest to observe it.
How to fix it
Apply the kernel patch that adds xor %rsi,%rsi back into the TDX_HYPERCALL macro (commit 2191950d35d8f81620ea8d4e04d983f664fe3a8a) and rebuild or upgrade to a kernel containing that commit.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the presence of the xor instruction immediately after the TDCALL in the __tdx_hypercall assembly; alternatively verify the running kernel contains commit 2191950d35d8f81620ea8d4e04d983f664fe3a8a or later.
Typical attack path
- Gain control of the host VMM or compromise the TDX module interface
- Prepare a malicious RSI value before invoking TDX_HYPERCALL
- Trigger the hypercall path from the guest
- Use speculative-execution side channels to read the uncleared register value
How to detect it
Review hypervisor and guest kernel logs around TDX hypercall entry points for unexpected register patterns; no public exploitation artifacts are known.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching TDX-enabled kernel builds first
- Update all stable kernel trees to the listed fixed commit
- Rebuild and redeploy guest images that use TDX
- Monitor upstream stable branches for the backported fix
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: x86/tdx: Zero out the missing RSI in TDX_HYPERCALL macro In the TDX_HYPERCALL asm, after the TDCALL instruction returns from the untrusted VMM, the registers that the TDX guest shares to the VMM need to be cleared to avoid speculative execution of VMM-provided values. RSI is specified in the bitmap of those registers, but it is missing when zeroing out those registers in the current TDX_HYPERCALL. It was there when it was originally added in commit 752d13305c78 ("x86/tdx: Expand __tdx_hypercall() to handle more arguments"), but was later removed in commit 1e70c680375a ("x86/tdx: Do not corrupt frame-pointer in __tdx_hypercall()"), which was correct because %rsi is later restored in the "pop %rsi". However a later commit 7a3a401874be ("x86/tdx: Drop flags from __tdx_hypercall()") removed that "pop %rsi" but forgot to add the "xor %rsi, %rsi" back. Fix by adding it back.
