What it actually does
The flaw is a NULL pointer dereference in the Linux kernel hantro VPU driver: on i.MX8MM/N/P the .reset operation is intentionally undefined (reset handled by genpd) yet the code unconditionally calls it, crashing the kernel.
Why it matters to the business
Unexpected crashes or denial of service on embedded Linux devices using the affected i.MX8M SoCs, interrupting media workloads and requiring reboots or recovery.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker triggers the hantro driver's reset code path on vulnerable hardware; because the reset pointer is NULL the kernel dereferences it and panics, achieving a local denial of service.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to the commit 64f55cebb4339ae771e9e7f3f42bee2489e2fa00 or any later stable branch that adds the NULL check before calling the reset operation.
How to confirm the fix worked
Inspect the hantro driver source for the added 'if (hantro->rstc) reset...' guard or confirm the running kernel is newer than the vulnerable commit; test VPU initialization on i.MX8M hardware.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local execution or trigger media/VPU initialization on an i.MX8M-based device running an unpatched kernel
- Invoke the code path that calls the undefined .reset operation
- Trigger NULL pointer dereference resulting in kernel oops or panic
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for NULL pointer dereference oops mentioning hantro or vpu reset; correlate with media device initialization events on i.MX8M platforms.
What your security team should do
- Apply the referenced kernel commit or a distribution backport as soon as possible
- Prioritize devices that expose VPU/media functionality to untrusted workloads
- Add kernel oops and hantro-related panic logs to monitoring pipelines
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: media: hantro: Check whether reset op is defined before use The i.MX8MM/N/P does not define the .reset op since reset of the VPU is done by genpd. Check whether the .reset op is defined before calling it to avoid NULL pointer dereference. Note that the Fixes tag is set to the commit which removed the reset op from i.MX8M Hantro G2 implementation, this is because before this commit all the implementations did define the .reset op.
