What it actually does
Uninitialized buf_alloc and fwd_cnt fields in struct virtio_vsock_hdr when allocating skb in virtio_transport_init_hdr, leading to use of uninit-value in virtio_transport_recv_pkt during vsock loopback processing.
Why it matters to the business
Potential kernel crashes or memory corruption on systems using virtio vsock, affecting virtual machine communication stability in Linux environments; low exploitation likelihood reduces immediate operational risk.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker triggers allocation of an skb without initializing header fields via a connect on an AF_VSOCK socket, causing the uninit values to propagate through virtio_transport_recv_pkt and vsock_loopback_work in the kernel workqueue.
How to fix it
Update Linux kernel to commit cd12535b97dd7d18cf655ec78ce1cf1f29a576be or later stable release containing the fix that initializes buf_alloc and fwd_cnt in virtio_transport_alloc_skb.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm kernel version includes the referenced commit; recompile with KMSAN and run the provided reproducer to verify absence of uninit-value reports in virtio_transport_recv_pkt.
Typical attack path
- Create AF_VSOCK SOCK_STREAM socket
- Connect to VMADDR_CID_ANY with arbitrary port to trigger skb allocation path
- Trigger vsock_loopback_work to process the packet and access uninit fields
- Observe kernel oops or memory corruption from KMSAN-detected uninit-value use
How to detect it
Inspect kernel logs for KMSAN or BUG reports referencing virtio_transport_recv_pkt and uninit-value; search dmesg or journalctl for vsock_loopback_work stack traces.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrade on systems using virtio-vsock or vsock loopback
- Monitor for kernel oops involving virtio_transport_recv_pkt or vsock_loopback_work
- Apply the fix commit across all affected stable branches

This patch resolves the issue by initializing these fields during allocation.
