What it actually does
Race condition in the CIFS client open_cached_dir function allows a use-after-free of a cached directory handle when a lease break occurs concurrently with directory open during statfs operations on multichannel SMB mounts.
Why it matters to the business
Linux systems mounting Windows file shares with multichannel enabled can experience kernel crashes, memory corruption, or unexpected service restarts during routine filesystem operations, increasing downtime risk on servers and workstations.
How an attack unfolds
A local attacker with the ability to trigger statfs calls against a CIFS mount with multichannel and lease caching enabled can win the race between open_cached_dir and cached_dir_lease_break, freeing the cfid structure while it is still referenced and causing a use-after-free that leads to kernel memory corruption.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 6db94d08359c43f2c8fe372811cdee04564a41b9 or later; rebuild and reboot with the patched kernel; disable multichannel temporarily if an immediate update is not possible.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains commit 6db94d08359c43f2c8fe372811cdee04564a41b9; reproduce the original fstests generic/072 workload under KASAN and verify absence of the slab-use-after-free report in smb2_query_info_compound.
Typical attack path
- Mount a remote SMB share using vers=3.1.1 and multichannel options
- Trigger concurrent statfs(2) operations on the mount point
- Force a lease break on the cached directory handle
- Win the race so that the last reference is dropped before the structure is fully initialized
- Read or write through the freed cfid pointer to corrupt kernel memory
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for KASAN slab-use-after-free reports mentioning smb2_query_info_compound; look for repeated CIFS VFS messages about missed lease breaks and 'No task to wake, unknown frame' during periods of statfs activity on SMB mounts.
- slab-use-after-free in smb2_query_info_compound
- CIFS: VFS: No task to wake, unknown frame
- open_cached_dir+0x71b/0x1240 [cifs]
- BUG: KASAN: slab-use-after-free
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates for all systems using CIFS mounts with multichannel enabled
- Add kernel version checks to configuration management and vulnerability scanning
- Monitor for CIFS lease-break warning messages in system logs until patches are deployed
- Review mount options and consider disabling multichannel on high-risk hosts until updated

And before returning from open_cached_dir(), we put the last reference of the new @cfid because of !@cfid->has_lease. Besides the UAF, while running xfstests a lot of missed lease breaks have been noticed in tests that run several concurrent statfs(2) calls on those cached fids CIFS: VFS: \\w22-root1.gandalf.test No task to wake, unknown frame... CIFS: VFS: \\w22-root1.gandalf.test Cmd: 18 Err: 0x0 Flags: 0x1... To fix both, in open_cached_dir() ensure that @cfid->has_lease is set right before sending out compounded request so that any potential lease break will be get processed by demultiplex thread while we're still caching @cfid. And, if open failed for some reason, re-check @cfid->has_lease to decide whether or not put lease reference.
