What it actually does
The flaw allows child PKEY interfaces created over netlink to be configured with multiple tx/rx queues even when the parent device supports only a single queue; this mismatch triggers a NULL pointer dereference inside kmem_cache_alloc during skb_clone when UDPv6 traffic is sent.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using legacy IPoIB on InfiniBand hardware can experience sudden kernel crashes and reboots under normal network traffic, causing unplanned downtime for storage, HPC, or high-speed networking workloads.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker or unprivileged process on a system with a multi-queue PKEY child interface simply sends UDPv6 datagrams; the queue count mismatch leads the networking stack to dereference a NULL pointer while allocating an skb clone, crashing the kernel.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 4a779187db39b2f32d048a752573e56e4e77807f or later; rebuild and reboot with the corrected IPoIB queue initialization logic.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the running kernel contains commit 4a779187db39b2f32d048a752573e56e4e77807f (or equivalent backport); confirm that PKEY child interfaces are created with exactly one tx and one rx queue via ethtool -l or /sys/class/net/<iface>/queues.
Typical attack path
- Create or bring up a legacy IPoIB PKEY child interface via netlink
- Send UDPv6 traffic (e.g., via sendto) over that interface
- skb_clone is called with a queue configuration that the parent device does not support
- kmem_cache_alloc receives a NULL cache pointer and dereferences it, triggering the oops
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and crash dumps for the signature strings kmem_cache_alloc+0xcb, ip6_finish_output2, and references to ipoib or PKEY interfaces; look for Oops: 0000 [#1] SMP accompanied by a NULL address near 000000000000036b.
- kmem_cache_alloc+0xcb/0x450
- BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference, address: 000000000000036b
- ip6_finish_output2+0x3fe/0x690
- udpv6_sendmsg
- PKEY interface
What your security team should do
- Apply the referenced kernel commit or distro update as soon as a package is available
- Audit systems that expose IPoIB PKEY interfaces and restrict unprivileged access until patched
- Monitor for kernel oops reports containing kmem_cache_alloc and ip6_finish_output2 on IPoIB devices
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: IB/IPoIB: Fix legacy IPoIB due to wrong number of queues The cited commit creates child PKEY interfaces over netlink will multiple tx and rx queues, but some devices doesn't support more than 1 tx and 1 rx queues. This causes to a crash when traffic is sent over the PKEY interface due to the parent having a single queue but the child having multiple queues. This patch fixes the number of queues to 1 for legacy IPoIB at the earliest possible point in time.
