What it actually does
Use-after-free in CIFS readpages_fill_pages and uncache_fill_pages when network instability triggers cifs_reconnect, cifs_abort_connection, smb2_readv_callback queuing work that frees rdata via cifs_readdata_release before the original read path accesses it.
Why it matters to the business
Unstable SMB/CIFS network conditions can cause kernel crashes or memory corruption on Linux systems accessing remote shares, leading to downtime, data loss risk, or potential privilege escalation; widespread in Linux distributions using CIFS client code.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker induces repeated network drops during active CIFS reads; the reconnect path queues a work item that releases the rdata structure while readpages_fill_pages still dereferences it, resulting in use-after-free.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 2b693fe3f760c87fd9768e759f6297f743a1b3b0 or later stable releases that reorder condition checks in the return path of readpages_fill_pages and uncache_fill_pages.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm kernel source contains the referenced commit; test CIFS reads under simulated network disconnects to verify no KASAN use-after-free reports occur; monitor for absence of the original call trace patterns.
Typical attack path
- Trigger network instability or connection abort during CIFS read operations
- cifs_reconnect calls cifs_abort_connection which invokes mid callback
- smb2_readv_callback queues work item on rdata
- Worker thread completes and frees rdata via kref_put and cifs_readdata_release
- Original readpages_fill_pages or uncache_fill_pages path continues and accesses freed memory
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and crash reports for KASAN use-after-free traces referencing readpages_fill_pages, cifs_readv_receive, cifs_demultiplex_thread, or cifs_readdata_release; correlate with CIFS connection aborts and reconnect events.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all systems using CIFS/SMB mounts within the next maintenance window
- Apply network stability mitigations such as keepalive tuning on SMB connections
- Enable KASAN or similar memory debugging in test environments to validate the fix
