A bug in the Linux kernel's memory handling can cause computers to crash or corrupt memory when pages are freed under certain conditions, and updating the kernel fixes it.

What it actually does
Race condition in __free_pages allows a compound page to be partially freed after its reference count drops, causing tail pages to be freed multiple times and resulting in bad page state, free list corruption, or kernel crashes during subsequent allocations.
Why it matters to the business
Systems running affected kernels may experience unexpected crashes, memory corruption, or service outages during normal operation or under memory pressure, leading to downtime and potential data loss in production workloads.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with the ability to trigger page allocation and freeing patterns (such as through network or filesystem activity) can race the reference count check and PageHead test in the page allocator, causing the kernel to double-free tail pages of a compound allocation and corrupt memory structures.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 0a626e27f984dfbe96bd8e4fd08f20a2ede3ea23 or later; rebuild and reboot all affected systems with the patched kernel.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel includes commit 0a626e27f984dfbe96bd8e4fd08f20a2ede3ea23 via 'git log' or package version checks; monitor for absence of 'BUG: Bad page state' and 'nonzero mapcount' messages after upgrade.
Typical attack path
- Trigger allocation of compound pages via user-space or kernel activity
- Force concurrent freeing paths that drop the final reference
- Exploit the window where PageHead returns false on a now-freed page
- Cause double-free of tail pages leading to allocator corruption
- Trigger subsequent allocations to surface bad page state or crashes
How to detect it
Search kernel logs for 'BUG: Bad page state', 'nonzero mapcount', and 'page dumped because' messages; inspect crash dumps for rmqueue or get_page_from_freelist call traces originating from __free_pages paths.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all production systems within the next maintenance window
- Enable kernel panic on oops to limit exposure from corrupted state
- Review workloads that perform heavy page allocation/freeing for stability after patching
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: Fix page corruption caused by racy check in __free_pages When we upgraded our kernel, we started seeing some page corruption like the following consistently: BUG: Bad page state in process ganesha.nfsd pfn:1304ca page:0000000022261c55 refcount:0 mapcount:-128 mapping:0000000000000000 index:0x0 pfn:0x1304ca flags: 0x17ffffc0000000() raw: 0017ffffc0000000 ffff8a513ffd4c98 ffffeee24b35ec08 0000000000000000 raw: 0000000000000000 0000000000000001 00000000ffffff7f 0000000000000000 page dumped because: nonzero mapcount CPU: 0 PID: 15567 Comm: ganesha.nfsd Kdump: loaded Tainted: P B O 5.10.158-1.nutanix.20221209.el7.x86_64 #1 Hardware name: VMware, Inc. Sometimes, it would also show up as corruption in the free list pointer and cause crashes. After bisecting the issue, we found the issue started from commit e320d3012d25 ("mm/page_alloc.c: fix freeing non-compound pages"): if (put_page_testzero(page)) free_the_page(page, order); else if (!PageHead(page)) while (order-- > 0) free_the_page(page + (1 << order), order); So the problem is the check PageHead is racy because at this point we already dropped our reference to the page. So even if we came in with compound page, the page can already be freed and PageHead can return false and we will end up freeing all the tail pages causing double free.
