A Linux storage driver could accept bad messages from a Ceph server and keep using damaged information, potentially harming stored files until the system is updated.

What it actually does

The flaw is improper validation of snap trace data received from the MDS; without the fix a corrupted trace allows the kclient to continue IO and metadata operations that can read or write incorrect contents.

Why it matters to the business

Linux systems using Ceph for shared storage face risk of silent data corruption or loss in production file services; the issue affects kernel clients across many distributions and downstream products, though exploitation remains uncommon.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker who can influence or compromise the Ceph MDS sends a malformed snap trace to connected kernel clients; the unpatched client accepts the bad trace and continues IO, resulting in metadata inconsistency or data corruption before any protective blocklisting occurs.

How to fix it

Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 66ec619e4591f8350f99c5269a7ce160cccc7a7c or any later stable release that includes the blocklist-and-evict change; apply the update and reboot affected nodes.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the running kernel contains commit 66ec619e4591f8350f99c5269a7ce160cccc7a7c, verify Ceph client logs show immediate blocklisting on receipt of corrupted snap traces, and test failover/recovery scenarios after upgrade.

Typical attack path

  1. Gain ability to send arbitrary snap traces from a Ceph MDS to kernel clients
  2. Transmit a corrupted snap trace to target kclients
  3. Client processes the invalid trace and performs subsequent IO/metadata operations
  4. Filesystem contents become inconsistent or corrupted on the client side

How to detect it

Search Ceph client and MDS logs for entries indicating corrupted snap traces, sudden client blocklisting, or forced evictions; correlate with unexpected IO errors or metadata inconsistencies on affected hosts.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel upgrades on all Ceph client nodes within standard change windows given low EPSS and absence from KEV
  • Enable Ceph logging of snap-trace errors and client evictions for ongoing monitoring
  • Review Ceph MDS health and snapshot consistency as part of routine storage audits

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ceph: blocklist the kclient when receiving corrupted snap trace When received corrupted snap trace we don't know what exactly has happened in MDS side. And we shouldn't continue IOs and metadatas access to MDS, which may corrupt or get incorrect contents. This patch will just block all the further IO/MDS requests immediately and then evict the kclient itself. The reason why we still need to evict the kclient just after blocking all the further IOs is that the MDS could revoke the caps faster.
