What it actually does
Integer underflow in NILFS_SB2_OFFSET_BYTES when device size is below 4096 bytes causes out-of-bounds block access on mount or excessive loop iterations and semaphore hangs in nilfs_sufile_resize during resize operations.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using the nilfs2 filesystem on extremely small storage devices may encounter mount failures, I/O errors, or prolonged system hangs that interrupt filesystem operations; the issue is uncommon given the rarity of sub-4KB devices.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker prepares a block device smaller than 4096 bytes, mounts it with nilfs2 or issues a resize ioctl to a size below the limit, triggering the underflow that leads to invalid memory access or a blocked writer thread.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to include commit 2f7a1135b202977b82457adde7db6c390056863b or later; enforce minimum device size checks of at least 4096 bytes before any nilfs2 mount or resize operation.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the presence of the referenced commit in the running kernel source; attempt mount and resize operations on devices below 4096 bytes and confirm absence of underflow errors and hangs.
Typical attack path
- Create or obtain a loop/block device smaller than 4096 bytes formatted as nilfs2
- Attempt to mount the device or call the resize ioctl
- Trigger underflow in superblock offset or sufile resize logic
- Induce OOB read or long-term semaphore block causing denial of service
How to detect it
Inspect kernel logs for messages indicating inability to read the secondary superblock, I/O errors referencing extremely large sector numbers, or the segctord task blocked for extended periods during resize operations.
- unable to read secondary superblock
- NILFS.*sector 36028797018963960
- segctord.*blocked for more than
- nilfs_sufile_resize
What your security team should do
- Apply the upstream fix or update to a patched kernel release immediately
- Prevent use of nilfs2 on storage devices smaller than 4096 bytes
- Review kernel logs for secondary superblock read failures or segctord blocking events
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: nilfs2: fix underflow in second superblock position calculations Macro NILFS_SB2_OFFSET_BYTES, which computes the position of the second superblock, underflows when the argument device size is less than 4096 bytes. Therefore, when using this macro, it is necessary to check in advance that the device size is not less than a lower limit, or at least that underflow does not occur. The current nilfs2 implementation lacks this check, causing out-of-bound block access when mounting devices smaller than 4096 bytes: I/O error, dev loop0, sector 36028797018963960 op 0x0:(READ) flags 0x0 phys_seg 1 prio class 2 NILFS (loop0): unable to read secondary superblock (blocksize = 1024) In addition, when trying to resize the filesystem to a size below 4096 bytes, this underflow occurs in nilfs_resize_fs(), passing a huge number of segments to nilfs_sufile_resize(), corrupting parameters such as the number of segments in superblocks. This causes excessive loop iterations in nilfs_sufile_resize() during a subsequent resize ioctl, causing semaphore ns_segctor_sem to block for a long time and hang the writer thread: INFO: task segctord:5067 blocked for more than 143 seconds.
