What it actually does
The flaw allows a usercopy of kernel memory outside the allowed skb->cb[] region when sock_recv_mark copies skb->mark to user space on arm64 builds with CONFIG_HARDENED_USERCOPY enabled, triggering a BUG in usercopy.c.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers may obtain small fragments of kernel memory, increasing the chance of further kernel exploitation or information leaks on systems that have not applied the fix.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker creates an AF_PACKET socket, sends or receives crafted packets that populate skb->mark outside the cb region, and invokes recvmsg so that put_cmsg performs the unsafe copy_to_user, causing the hardened check to fire or leaking data.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to the commit 863a7de987f02a901bf215509276a7de0370e0f9 or later stable releases that use a bounce buffer for skb->mark copies.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains commit 863a7de987f02a901bf215509276a7de0370e0f9; recompile with CONFIG_HARDENED_USERCOPY=y and verify no crash occurs on arm64 during packet receive operations that exercise sock_recv_mark.
Typical attack path
- Create AF_PACKET socket with appropriate options
- Trigger packet reception that sets skb->mark
- Call recvmsg to invoke sock_recv_cmsgs and put_cmsg
- Observe kernel BUG or obtain leaked bytes from the copy
How to detect it
Search kernel logs for the exact strings 'usercopy: Kernel memory exposure attempt detected from SLUB object skbuff_head_cache' and 'kernel BUG at mm/usercopy.c'; inspect crash dumps showing usercopy_abort called from put_cmsg or sock_recv_mark.
- usercopy: Kernel memory exposure attempt detected from SLUB object 'skbuff_head_cache'
- kernel BUG at mm/usercopy.c:102
- usercopy_abort+0x90/0x94 mm/usercopy.c:90
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all arm64 systems running affected versions
- Enable CONFIG_HARDENED_USERCOPY where not already active
- Monitor for usercopy BUG reports in kernel logs as an immediate detection signal
- Apply the fix before the next scheduled maintenance window given the public syzbot report
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: use a bounce buffer for copying skb->mark syzbot found arm64 builds would crash in sock_recv_mark() when CONFIG_HARDENED_USERCOPY=y x86 and powerpc are not detecting the issue because they define user_access_begin. This will be handled in a different patch, because a check_object_size() is missing. Only data from skb->cb[] can be copied directly to/from user space, as explained in commit 79a8a642bf05 ("net: Whitelist the skbuff_head_cache "cb" field") syzbot report was: usercopy: Kernel memory exposure attempt detected from SLUB object 'skbuff_head_cache' (offset 168, size 4)! ------------[ cut here ]------------ kernel BUG at mm/usercopy.c:102 !
