Cloudanix analysis
A cleanup routine in a Linux display driver was accidentally left out of the final kernel build, so unplugging or reconfiguring the hardware could leave behind used memory and cause problems over time.

What it actually does
Marking the driver's remove function with __exit causes it to be discarded when compiled built-in, so unbind performs no cleanup and leaks resources.
Why it matters to the business
Linux systems using the tpd12s015 bridge driver may experience gradual resource exhaustion or instability after driver unbind operations, increasing maintenance burden for organizations running affected kernels.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access or the ability to trigger driver unbind can cause the kernel to skip cleanup code, resulting in leaked resources that may be leveraged for further memory corruption or denial-of-service.
How to fix it
Upgrade to a kernel containing commit 53926e2a39629702f7f809d614b3ca89c2478205 or later; rebuild and redeploy the kernel with the corrected annotation removed from the remove function.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the remove function lacks the __exit annotation in the built driver source, verify the commit is present in the running kernel tree, and test driver bind/unbind cycles for complete resource release.
Typical attack path
- Identify systems running a vulnerable Linux kernel with the tpd12s015 driver built-in
- Trigger module unbind or device removal through userspace or hardware events
- Observe absence of cleanup leading to resource leakage
- Repeat to amplify exhaustion or combine with other memory manipulation primitives
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for repeated driver unbind events without corresponding cleanup messages; inspect memory usage trends on systems with the tpd12s015 driver after device removal operations.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrade on all systems using the tpd12s015 driver within the next maintenance window
- Audit custom or downstream kernels for the same __exit annotation error
- Monitor for increased memory or resource usage on affected hosts until patched
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/bridge: tpd12s015: Drop buggy __exit annotation for remove function With tpd12s015_remove() marked with __exit this function is discarded when the driver is compiled as a built-in. The result is that when the driver unbinds there is no cleanup done which results in resource leakage or worse.
