What it actually does
Out-of-bounds memory read occurs when register_sysctl_mount_point evaluates the first element of a zero-length ctl_table array to detect permanently empty directories; the kernel now passes a size-1 table and relies only on type to identify emptiness.
Why it matters to the business
May trigger kernel memory corruption or crashes in Cilium-managed Linux nodes, disrupting container networking and cluster stability; low exploitability and no known ransomware use reduce immediate urgency but patching is required for long-term reliability.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker triggers registration of an empty sysctl mount point (for example via Cilium's eBPF or network policy loading paths) so the kernel performs an unchecked access to the first element of a zero-sized ctl_table, resulting in undefined behavior.
How to fix it
Upgrade Cilium to commit ed3dfa0aab8b80f7e841a6d49d2a990ac2dca053 or any later release that contains the size-1 ctl_table change; rebuild and redeploy node images containing the patched kernel module.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the commit ed3dfa0aab8b80f7e841a6d49d2a990ac2dca053 is present in the running Cilium source tree; exercise sysctl registration paths with empty tables and verify no out-of-bounds accesses are reported by kernel sanitizers.
Typical attack path
- Obtain code execution or sufficient privileges inside a Cilium-managed node
- Cause Cilium or the kernel to invoke register_sysctl_mount_point with an empty table
- Trigger the permanent-emptiness check that dereferences beyond the table bounds
- Observe or exploit resulting memory corruption or denial of service
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for sysctl registration errors or out-of-bounds warnings around Cilium startup; inspect auditd or eBPF traces for unexpected calls to register_sysctl_mount_point with zero-length tables.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching Cilium nodes to the fixed commit within the next maintenance window
- Enable kernel memory-safety features (KASAN, UBSAN) on test clusters to validate the fix
- Monitor Cilium release notes for any additional sysctl-related hardening
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: sysctl: Fix out of bounds access for empty sysctl registers When registering tables to the sysctl subsystem there is a check to see if header is a permanently empty directory (used for mounts). This check evaluates the first element of the ctl_table. This results in an out of bounds evaluation when registering empty directories. The function register_sysctl_mount_point now passes a ctl_table of size 1 instead of size 0. It now relies solely on the type to identify a permanently empty register. Make sure that the ctl_table has at least one element before testing for permanent emptiness.
