What it actually does
The flaw causes a soft lockup in arm_smmu_cmdq_issue_cmdlist when arm_smmu_mm_arch_invalidate_secondary_tlbs issues per-page TLBI commands without checking against a MAX_TLBI_OPS threshold during large munmap operations in SVA configurations that share CPU page tables with the SMMU.
Why it matters to the business
Linux systems using ARM SMMU with shared virtual addressing can become unresponsive during routine memory unmapping, interrupting workloads and requiring reboots in affected environments.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local code execution triggers repeated large munmap calls that invoke the SMMU TLB invalidation path next to CPU TLB flushes; because the SMMU path lacks the MAX_TLBI_OPS guard present on the CPU side, the command queue processing spins long enough to hit the soft-lockup watchdog.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit f5a604757aa8e37ea9c7011dc9da54fa1b30f29b, which introduces CMDQ_MAX_TLBI_OPS and replaces per-page TLBI commands with a single per-ASID command when the threshold is reached.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains f5a604757aa8e37ea9c7011dc9da54fa1b30f29b or later equivalent backport; reproduce large munmap workloads under SVA and verify absence of soft-lockup messages referencing arm_smmu_cmdq_issue_cmdlist.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local execution on an affected ARM64 Linux system configured for SVA with SMMU-v3
- Perform or induce large contiguous or repeated munmap operations on memory regions backed by the shared page tables
- Trigger the mmu_notifier path that calls arm_smmu_mm_arch_invalidate_secondary_tlbs without batching
- Cause the command queue to issue an unbounded number of per-page TLBI commands, resulting in CPU soft lockup
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for soft-lockup watchdog messages that list arm_smmu_cmdq_issue_cmdlist in the call trace, especially on systems performing munmap under SVA workloads; correlate with timestamps of unmap-heavy processes.
- arm_smmu_cmdq_issue_cmdlist+0x178/0xa50
- arm_smmu_mm_arch_invalidate_secondary_tlbs
- watchdog: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#.* stuck for .*s!
- __arm_smmu_tlb_inv_range
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all ARM64 systems using SMMU-v3 and SVA workloads
- Monitor kernel logs for soft-lockup traces containing arm_smmu_cmdq_issue_cmdlist until patches are deployed
- Apply the fix during the next maintenance window given the low EPSS and absence from KEV

The commit 06ff87bae8d3 ("arm64: mm: remove unused functions and variable protoypes") fixed a similar lockup on the CPU MMU side. Yet, it can occur to SMMU too, since arm_smmu_mm_arch_invalidate_secondary_tlbs() is called typically next to MMU tlb flush function, e.g. tlb_flush_mmu_tlbonly { tlb_flush { __flush_tlb_range { // check MAX_TLBI_OPS } } mmu_notifier_arch_invalidate_secondary_tlbs { arm_smmu_mm_arch_invalidate_secondary_tlbs { // does not check MAX_TLBI_OPS } } } Clone a CMDQ_MAX_TLBI_OPS from the MAX_TLBI_OPS in tlbflush.h, since in an SVA case SMMU uses the CPU page table, so it makes sense to align with the tlbflush code. Then, replace per-page TLBI commands with a single per-asid TLBI command, if the request size hits this threshold.
