What it actually does
The vulnerability permits SMTP command smuggling by accepting lines terminated only with LF (line feed) characters rather than the required CRLF sequence, allowing injection of unauthorized SMTP commands.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers could bypass email security controls, leading to spoofed emails or unauthorized message delivery that undermines trust in email communications.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker connects to the SMTP server and sends commands using LF line endings to smuggle additional commands after the initial message, potentially altering the email flow without proper validation.
How to fix it
Update chasquid to version 1.13 or later. For affected deployments, apply the fix from commit e45fcf30b579a9a2a03bbbb35efb96556f1ad426.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the chasquid version is at least 1.13 and test SMTP transactions to ensure only CRLF-terminated lines are accepted.
Typical attack path
- Establish SMTP connection to the vulnerable server
- Transmit message data using LF-terminated lines containing smuggled SMTP commands
- Complete the transaction to execute the injected commands on the server
How to detect it
Examine SMTP server logs for lines ending with LF instead of CRLF and look for unexpected command sequences in email transactions.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize updating affected software to the fixed versions immediately
- Monitor SMTP traffic for anomalies in line termination
- Review and harden input validation on email servers
The record
chasquid before 1.13 allows SMTP smuggling because LF-terminated lines are accepted.
