What it actually does
Buffer overflow in the LaTeX string length handling component allows remote unauthenticated attackers to overwrite memory and execute arbitrary code.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers can gain full control of affected collaborative markdown servers, leading to data theft, service disruption, or use as an entry point into connected systems; the issue has been public for nearly three years with public exploit code available.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts a maliciously long LaTeX expression and submits it through the math rendering path; the oversized input overflows the fixed-size buffer, corrupting adjacent memory structures and allowing the attacker to redirect execution to attacker-controlled shellcode.
How to fix it
Upgrade hackmdio/codimd to commit da511d0b1661e1f496e700bda35dc2b127dd456e or later; disable the math rendering feature if an immediate upgrade is not possible.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the deployed git commit is at or beyond da511d0b1661e1f496e700bda35dc2b127dd456e; attempt to render a LaTeX string exceeding prior buffer limits and verify the process does not crash or execute unexpected code.
Typical attack path
- Identify an instance of the affected codimd deployment exposing math rendering
- Prepare a payload consisting of an excessively long LaTeX string designed to trigger the overflow
- Submit the payload via the web interface or API that processes LaTeX input
- Achieve memory corruption leading to arbitrary code execution on the server
- Establish persistence or exfiltrate data from the compromised host
How to detect it
Review web server and application logs for unusually long LaTeX strings submitted to math endpoints; inspect for segmentation faults or unexpected process terminations around math rendering activity; correlate with successful outbound connections or new processes spawned after such requests.
What your security team should do
- Apply the referenced commit immediately given the critical severity and public exploit availability
- Scan all codimd instances for the vulnerable math rendering code path
- Monitor for unusual process behavior or crashes in the math rendering component
- Consider network segmentation for any remaining unpatched instances
The record
Buffer Overflow vulnerability in Mathtex v.1.05 and before allows a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code via the length of the LaTeX string component.
