What it actually does

This vulnerability allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to invoke an Apache OFBiz URI that should require authorization. Through that URI, the attacker can read arbitrary file properties and can cause the OFBiz server to make outbound requests, creating a server-side request forgery condition. The main technical consequence is unauthorized disclosure of sensitive data, including local application properties, configuration-derived secrets, and responses from internal-only network services reachable from the OFBiz host. The CVSS vector indicates network exploitation with low complexity, no privileges, and no user interaction, with high confidentiality impact and no direct integrity or availability impact.

Why it matters to the business

A vulnerable internet-facing OFBiz instance can be used to expose sensitive configuration data, credentials, service endpoints, and internal system metadata that are not intended to be public. If deployed in cloud or container environments, SSRF can potentially expose instance metadata or short-lived credentials, enabling follow-on compromise. The issue is not listed in CISA KEV and is not marked as ransomware-associated, but the EPSS score is high and exploit maturity is weaponized, so exploitation should be treated as likely on exposed systems. Because the issue has been public since December 2023, unpatched systems have had a long exposure window.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker first identifies an exposed Apache OFBiz service and probes unauthenticated control or application URIs for the vulnerable request path. They then submit crafted requests that cause OFBiz to process a URI call without enforcing the expected authorization checks. For file-property disclosure, the attacker supplies values that cause OFBiz to read or return properties from files accessible to the application process. For SSRF, the attacker supplies internal, loopback, cloud metadata, or attacker-controlled URLs and observes the server-side response or timing behavior. Successful exploitation gives the attacker information that can be used for escalation, such as application configuration, credentials, internal hostnames, service banners, cloud metadata, or tokens. The attacker may then use the disclosed data to access additional systems, authenticate to services, or stage further attacks against the OFBiz deployment or adjacent infrastructure.

How to fix it

Upgrade Apache OFBiz to version 18.12.11 or later, which contains the vendor fix for this issue. Where OFBiz is supplied through an operating system or downstream package, apply the vendor-provided fixed package; the supplied package metadata lists Debian 13 fixed in version 6.8.11-1 where applicable. Restrict direct internet access to OFBiz administrative and control interfaces, place OFBiz behind authenticated access controls, and enforce allowlisted reverse proxy routes. Add outbound egress controls so the OFBiz server cannot reach cloud metadata IPs, loopback-only administrative services, internal management networks, or arbitrary internet destinations unless explicitly required. Review application configuration files and secrets that may have been exposed and rotate credentials if exploitation is suspected.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the deployed Apache OFBiz version is 18.12.11 or later, or that the relevant downstream package is at the fixed vendor version. Validate from an unauthenticated context that the previously vulnerable URI call no longer returns file properties or fetches remote URLs and instead returns an authorization failure or safe error. Review reverse proxy, web server, and OFBiz access logs for pre-fix exploit attempts. Confirm network controls block outbound requests from OFBiz to 169.254.169.254, loopback addresses, private address ranges, and unnecessary external destinations. If safe testing is performed, use a controlled canary URL and verify no outbound callback is made by the patched system.

Typical attack path

  1. Discover an exposed Apache OFBiz instance through scanning, search engines, or known application fingerprints.
  2. Send unauthenticated requests to OFBiz URI-handling endpoints to determine whether authorization is improperly bypassed.
  3. Craft requests that reference local file properties or remote URLs using schemes such as file, http, or https.
  4. Use SSRF payloads to query loopback, internal RFC1918 addresses, or cloud metadata services from the OFBiz server.
  5. Collect returned file properties, metadata, credentials, service details, or response differences from blind SSRF attempts.
  6. Use any disclosed secrets or internal service information for lateral movement, privilege escalation, or additional exploitation.

How to detect it

Review Apache OFBiz application logs, servlet container logs, reverse proxy logs, WAF logs, DNS logs, outbound firewall/proxy logs, and cloud metadata access logs for evidence of unauthenticated requests that include file paths, URL schemes, loopback addresses, private IP ranges, or cloud metadata endpoints. Pay special attention to HTTP 200 responses, unusually large responses, 3xx redirects, 4xx/5xx probing patterns, and repeated requests with parameters containing file://, http://, https://, localhost, 127.0.0.1, 10., 172.16-31., 192.168., or 169.254.169.254. For blind SSRF, correlate inbound OFBiz requests with outbound connections from the OFBiz host to attacker-controlled domains, DNS canary domains, internal services, or cloud metadata services at the same timestamp. Investigate any subsequent use of credentials, tokens, database connection strings, or internal hostnames that appear in OFBiz configuration files. If threat hunting identifies successful metadata access, review cloud audit logs for temporary credential use and rotate impacted secrets.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching all exposed Apache OFBiz deployments to 18.12.11 or later because exploitation is weaponized and EPSS is high.
  • Inventory internet-facing OFBiz instances and restrict access to control, webtools, admin, and management paths behind authentication and network allowlists.
  • Search historical logs since the public disclosure date for unauthenticated requests containing URL schemes, metadata-service addresses, loopback addresses, or private IP targets in OFBiz request parameters.
  • Block OFBiz server egress to cloud metadata services, loopback management ports, internal-only subnets, and arbitrary external destinations unless there is a documented business need.
  • Rotate credentials, API keys, database passwords, and cloud tokens stored in OFBiz-accessible configuration files if suspicious access is found.
  • Add SIEM detections for SSRF patterns against OFBiz, especially requests containing file://, 169.254.169.254, localhost, 127.0.0.1, or RFC1918 targets.
  • Monitor for follow-on authentication attempts or internal service access using credentials or hostnames that could have been exposed through OFBiz configuration disclosure.

The record

Arbitrary file properties reading vulnerability in Apache Software Foundation Apache OFBiz when user operates an uri call without authorizations. The same uri can be operated to realize a SSRF attack also without authorizations. Users are recommended to upgrade to version 18.12.11, which fixes this issue.
