What it actually does
Triggers a segmentation fault crash in the _nc_wrap_entry component of NCurses during input processing.
Why it matters to the business
Causes terminal-based applications to become unavailable, interrupting operations that depend on text interfaces and requiring restarts or workarounds.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker provides crafted input to a vulnerable NCurses application over the network; when the library processes the input requiring user interaction, the fault in _nc_wrap_entry is triggered resulting in denial of service.
How to fix it
Upgrade NCurses to a version newer than 6.4-20230418 and rebuild dependent applications; apply any available vendor patches immediately given the extended time since disclosure.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the installed NCurses version exceeds 6.4-20230418, then retest input handling paths to ensure no segmentation faults occur.
Typical attack path
- Locate applications built against the vulnerable NCurses version
- Craft input that reaches _nc_wrap_entry
- Deliver the input requiring user interaction
- Induce the segmentation fault to crash the process
How to detect it
Review system and application logs for segmentation fault entries referencing NCurses or the _nc_wrap_entry function, and correlate with unexpected process terminations.
What your security team should do
- Inventory all systems using NCurses and prioritize upgrades
- Disable or sandbox affected terminal applications until patched
- Monitor crash logs for recurring segmentation faults in NCurses components
The record
NCurse v6.4-20230418 was discovered to contain a segmentation fault via the component _nc_wrap_entry().
