What it actually does
A segmentation violation occurs in UncompressedImageCodec::get_luma_bits_per_pixel_from_configuration_unci during processing of malformed image configuration data, resulting in memory corruption.
Why it matters to the business
Applications that process untrusted image files may crash unexpectedly, interrupting image handling workflows and requiring restarts or workarounds until a fix is available.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker supplies a specially crafted HEIF image file that triggers the segmentation violation when the vulnerable libheif library parses the uncompressed image configuration data.
How to fix it
Upgrade libheif to the latest available version that resolves the segmentation fault; if no fixed version exists yet, implement input sanitization or sandboxing for image processing until a patch is released.
How to confirm the fix worked
Test the updated library against the original crashing image samples and verify absence of segmentation faults under the same inputs; monitor vendor advisories for confirmed fixes.
Typical attack path
- Craft a malicious HEIF image that targets the affected codec path
- Deliver the image via web upload, email attachment, or file share
- Victim application loads and processes the image using libheif
- Trigger segmentation violation leading to process crash
How to detect it
Inspect application and system logs for segmentation fault entries or crashes originating from libheif image decoding functions; correlate with file processing events involving HEIF content.
What your security team should do
- Restrict processing of untrusted HEIF images until a fixed version is deployed
- Monitor upstream libheif releases for the corrective update
- Apply sandboxing or process isolation around image decoding components
- Review and update image handling libraries across all dependent applications
