What it actually does

Misuse of strncpy without ensuring null termination on the CGI script path in cgi.c allows a buffer overflow, enabling out-of-bounds memory access that can result in information disclosure or denial of service.

Why it matters to the business

Remote attackers can read sensitive memory contents or crash the web server, leading to potential data exposure and service disruption for organizations using affected weborf versions.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker sends an HTTP request triggering CGI script handling with a path that exceeds the allocated buffer size; the missing null terminator from strncpy causes the server to read or write beyond buffer bounds during path processing.

How to fix it

Upgrade ltworf/weborf to the fixed commit 49824204add55aab0568d90a6b1e7c822d32120d or later release; rebuild and redeploy the server binary after applying the patch.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify the running binary or source is built from commit 49824204add55aab0568d90a6b1e7c822d32120d or newer; test CGI request handling with oversized paths to confirm null termination.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify a target running vulnerable weborf version exposing CGI functionality
  2. Craft an HTTP request with a CGI path longer than the buffer size without null termination
  3. Send the request to trigger strncpy misuse in cgi.c path handling
  4. Leverage resulting buffer overflow for memory disclosure or crash

How to detect it

Search web server access logs for CGI requests with unusually long or malformed paths; inspect system logs for segmentation faults or memory corruption events tied to the weborf process.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately update all instances of weborf to the fixed commit
  • Disable or restrict CGI script execution if patching is delayed
  • Monitor for unusual CGI-related crashes or memory errors in server logs
  • Review and limit exposure of weborf instances to untrusted networks

The record

cgi.c in weborf .0.17, 0.18, 0.19, and 0.20 (before 1.0) lacks '\0' termination of the path for CGI scripts because strncpy is misused.
