What it actually does
Use-after-free in mm/mempolicy.c triggered by a race between mbind() and a VMA-locked page fault, enabling local memory corruption that can crash the kernel or leak kernel memory contents.
Why it matters to the business
Local users on affected Linux systems can trigger denial of service or exposure of kernel data, leading to unplanned outages, potential data breaches, and the need for urgent kernel updates across server and endpoint fleets.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access crafts a program that concurrently calls mbind() while forcing page faults on locked VMAs; successful race win frees a structure that is later reused, resulting in either a kernel panic or disclosure of kernel memory to user space.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 2dde18cd1d8fac735875f2e4987f11817cc0bc2c or later; rebuild and reboot all affected systems; where immediate patching is impossible, restrict untrusted local accounts and monitor for kernel panics.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains commit 2dde18cd1d8fac735875f2e4987f11817cc0bc2c or a backport; attempt reproduction of the original race in a test environment and verify absence of crashes or leaks; review kernel changelog for the fix entry.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local shell or unprivileged process on target Linux host
- Map memory regions and prepare concurrent mbind and page-fault threads
- Trigger the race condition repeatedly until use-after-free occurs
- Leverage resulting corruption for crash or kernel memory read
How to detect it
Search kernel logs for oops, panic, or warning messages referencing mempolicy.c or mbind; inspect auditd or syscall logs for unusual sequences of mbind and page-fault activity from the same process; review crash dumps for use-after-free signatures in the memory-management subsystem.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all internet-facing and multi-tenant systems within the next maintenance window
- Inventory all distributions and custom kernels to identify remaining vulnerable versions
- Apply least-privilege controls to limit local account creation until patches are deployed
- Add kernel oops and page-fault anomaly alerts to existing monitoring
The record
A use-after-free flaw was found in mm/mempolicy.c in the memory management subsystem in the Linux Kernel. This issue is caused by a race between mbind() and VMA-locked page fault, and may allow a local attacker to crash the system or lead to a kernel information leak.
