What it actually does

Buffer overflow in Mbed TLS during TLS processing allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to overwrite memory and achieve arbitrary code execution.

Why it matters to the business

Compromise of systems relying on this encryption library can result in full remote takeover, exposing sensitive data and disrupting operations across dependent products and services.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker sends specially crafted network packets to a service using the vulnerable library; the malformed input triggers the buffer overflow during TLS handshake or record processing, enabling shellcode injection and remote code execution without credentials.

How to fix it

Upgrade Mbed TLS to a fixed version containing commit 1ec69067fa1351427f904362c1221b31538c8b57 (version 3.5 or later) in all affected products and rebuild dependent applications.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify the installed library version against the fixed commit, recompile applications with the updated library, and perform regression testing on TLS connections to confirm absence of the overflow.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify network-exposed services using the vulnerable Mbed TLS version
  2. Craft and send malicious TLS packets targeting the overflow condition
  3. Overwrite memory structures to redirect execution flow
  4. Inject and execute arbitrary code on the target system

How to detect it

Review application and TLS library logs for unusual handshake failures or crashes around the time of suspected activity; examine process memory dumps or core files for signs of buffer manipulation during TLS record handling.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize inventory of all products using Mbed TLS 3.2.x-3.4.x and schedule immediate upgrades
  • Monitor EPSS trend for rising exploitation likelihood and apply patches within standard change windows
  • Implement network segmentation and TLS inspection where upgrades cannot be applied quickly

The record

Mbed TLS 3.2.x through 3.4.x before 3.5 has a Buffer Overflow that can lead to remote Code execution.
