What it actually does

Unsanitized JavaScript embedded in an instant message is rendered and executed in the recipient's browser context, enabling cross-site scripting.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers can steal session tokens, perform actions on behalf of users, or deliver phishing content inside the messaging application, leading to account compromise and loss of user trust.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts an instant message containing executable script, sends it to a victim user through the application, and the script runs in the victim's browser when the message is viewed, allowing theft of cookies or other client-side actions.

How to fix it

Upgrade wolfssl packages to version 5.6.6-1.2 or later on all Debian 13, Debian 14, and Ubuntu 24.04 LTS systems. Apply input sanitization and output encoding for all instant message content.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed wolfssl package version is at least 5.6.6-1.2 using the system package manager, then test that previously exploitable message payloads are now blocked or escaped.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify a target user reachable via instant messaging
  2. Craft a message payload containing JavaScript that performs malicious actions
  3. Send the message through the normal chat interface
  4. Victim views the message, triggering script execution in their browser
  5. Attacker receives exfiltrated data or performs unauthorized actions

How to detect it

Search application and web server logs for messages containing script tags, event handlers, or encoded JavaScript sent to multiple recipients; inspect browser console logs on affected clients for unexpected script execution.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize upgrade of affected wolfssl packages to 5.6.6-1.2 across all environments
  • Implement content security policy headers to limit script execution
  • Review and harden message input validation routines

The record

A cross-site scripting vulnerability exists in Citadel versions prior to 994. When a malicious user sends an instant message with some JavaScript code, the script may be executed on the web browser of the victim user.
