What it actually does
Use-after-free in btrfs_get_dev_args_from_path allows a local privileged attacker to trigger a kernel crash or leak internal kernel memory contents.
Why it matters to the business
Linux systems using the btrfs filesystem face risk of unexpected crashes or exposure of kernel internals to a local privileged user; the issue is over three years old with very low observed exploitation probability and no known ransomware or KEV usage.
How an attack unfolds
A local attacker with root or equivalent privileges supplies a specially crafted device path to the btrfs volume handling code, triggering the use-after-free condition to either destabilize the kernel or read freed memory.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 4fe89d07dcc2804c8b562f6c7896a45643d34b2f or later; apply the fix across all affected distributions and rebuild any custom kernels.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the running kernel contains commit 4fe89d07dcc2804c8b562f6c7896a45643d34b2f by checking git log or kernel version strings; attempt to reproduce the original crash condition in a test environment to confirm the defect is resolved.
Typical attack path
- Gain local access with high privileges on a btrfs-enabled Linux system
- Invoke the btrfs_get_dev_args_from_path function with a malformed path argument
- Trigger the use-after-free to cause a kernel panic or read kernel memory
How to detect it
Inspect kernel logs for btrfs-related oops or panic entries referencing volumes.c around the time of suspected activity; look for unusual process behavior that interacts with btrfs volumes using high privileges.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching btrfs-enabled systems that allow local privileged access
- Review kernel update policies to ensure timely adoption of upstream fixes
- Monitor for any future EPSS increases or new threat actor activity despite current low scores
The record
A use-after-free flaw was found in btrfs_get_dev_args_from_path in fs/btrfs/volumes.c in btrfs file-system in the Linux Kernel. This flaw allows a local attacker with special privileges to cause a system crash or leak internal kernel information
