What it actually does
The flaw allows XML External Entity (XXE) attacks when parsing XML content in project files, enabling local file disclosure or other XXE impacts when a user opens a malicious project.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers can steal sensitive data from developers' machines if they open untrusted projects, potentially leading to data breaches in development environments; the vulnerability has been public for over two years with proof-of-concept exploits available.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker creates a malicious project with an XML file containing XXE payloads and shares it (e.g., via public repository or patch). The victim opens the project or updates an existing one in a vulnerable Eclipse IDE version, triggering the XML parser to process external entities and exfiltrate data or perform other XXE actions.
How to fix it
Upgrade Eclipse IDE to version 2023-09 (4.29) or later; for eclipse-cdt/cdt update to commit c7169b3186d2fef20f97467c3e2ad78e2943ed1b.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the installed Eclipse IDE version is 2023-09 or newer; test that XML parsing in affected components no longer resolves external entities.
Typical attack path
- Create malicious XML file containing XXE payload
- Host the file in a public repository or share the project
- Victim opens the evil project or applies an update in Eclipse IDE
- Vulnerable XML parser processes the external entity references
- Data exfiltration or other attacker-controlled actions occur
How to detect it
Review IDE logs and system file access logs for unexpected reads triggered during project open or update operations; look for Eclipse processes performing unusual external network or file activity.
What your security team should do
- Update all Eclipse IDE installations to 2023-09 or later as a priority
- Train developers to avoid opening untrusted projects or patches
- Scan development environments for the vulnerable versions
- Review and restrict network access from IDE processes where possible
The record
In Eclipse IDE versions < 2023-09 (4.29) some files with xml content are parsed vulnerable against all sorts of XXE attacks. The user just needs to open any evil project or update an open project with a vulnerable file (for example for review a foreign repository or patch).
