What it actually does
The vulnerability is an unauthenticated remote code execution flaw in LG Simple Editor caused by improper validation of user-controlled file paths passed to the cp command inside the makeDetailContent method. Because traversal sequences can influence file operations outside the intended directory, an attacker can place, overwrite, or manipulate files in sensitive locations and ultimately execute arbitrary code. Successful exploitation runs code with SYSTEM privileges, giving the attacker full control of the affected Windows host, including the ability to read or modify data, install services, create users, disable security tooling, and use the system for lateral movement.
Why it matters to the business
A remotely reachable LG Simple Editor installation can be fully taken over without credentials or user interaction. Because exploitation is low-complexity, weaponized, and has a high EPSS score, exposed systems should be treated as high-priority risks even though the issue is not currently listed in CISA KEV. Compromise could disrupt digital signage or content-management operations, expose stored content or credentials, provide a foothold into internal networks, and require incident response, rebuilding of affected hosts, and credential rotation.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker first identifies an internet-facing or network-accessible LG Simple Editor service. They then send a crafted request to functionality that reaches the makeDetailContent method and abuses the cp command by supplying a malicious path containing traversal sequences or an attacker-controlled destination. Because the application does not properly constrain the path before performing file operations, the attacker can cause files to be copied to unintended locations. By writing or replacing a file that the application or operating system will execute, the attacker gains code execution as the LG Simple Editor process context, which is reported as SYSTEM. After gaining execution, the attacker may deploy a web shell or payload, create persistence, collect credentials, stage additional tooling, and pivot from the signage/content-management system into adjacent systems.
How to fix it
Upgrade LG Simple Editor to a vendor-fixed release as soon as one is available from LG; no exact fixed version was provided in the supplied data. If immediate upgrade is not possible, remove internet exposure, restrict access to trusted administrative networks or VPN, block untrusted access to LG Simple Editor web interfaces, and place the service behind network controls that enforce authentication and allow-listing. Apply vendor hardening guidance, ensure the application runs with least privilege where supported, and monitor or restrict write access to executable directories. Because exploitation results in SYSTEM-level code execution, systems suspected of compromise should be rebuilt from trusted media rather than only patched in place.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the installed LG Simple Editor version is a vendor-fixed build or has received the relevant security update. Validate that the application is not reachable from untrusted networks and that firewall or access-control rules limit access to authorized management hosts only. Perform a safe negative test by sending benign traversal-style path values to relevant file-copy/content-creation functionality and confirming the application rejects or normalizes them without copying files outside the intended directory. Review file-system permissions to ensure the application cannot write to startup, service, web-root, scheduled-task, or other executable locations unless explicitly required. Re-scan externally and internally to verify exposed vulnerable services are no longer discoverable.
Typical attack path
- Scan for LG Simple Editor services exposed to the internet or reachable on internal networks.
- Send probe requests to identify vulnerable LG Simple Editor behavior associated with makeDetailContent or cp command handling.
- Craft a request containing path traversal sequences such as ../ or ..\ in a user-supplied path used by the cp operation.
- Copy, overwrite, or place an attacker-controlled file outside the intended application directory.
- Trigger execution of the placed file or rely on an application/OS execution path that runs it.
- Obtain arbitrary code execution as SYSTEM.
- Establish persistence, disable defenses, collect credentials, and use the host for lateral movement or further payload deployment.
How to detect it
Review web, application, reverse proxy, EDR, Windows Security, PowerShell, Sysmon, and file-integrity logs for evidence of path traversal and post-exploitation activity. Look for requests to LG Simple Editor functionality involving makeDetailContent, cp operations, encoded or plain traversal sequences, and unusual source IPs. Examine the application install directory, web-accessible directories, Windows startup folders, scheduled tasks, services, temporary directories, and recently modified executable/script files for unexpected additions. In EDR/Sysmon, hunt for the LG Simple Editor process or associated web/application service spawning command interpreters or scripting tools such as cmd.exe, powershell.exe, wscript.exe, cscript.exe, mshta.exe, rundll32.exe, certutil.exe, bitsadmin.exe, curl.exe, or wget.exe. On Windows, review Event ID 4688 or Sysmon Event ID 1 for suspicious process creation, Event ID 4698 for scheduled task creation, Event ID 7045 for new services, PowerShell 4103/4104 for script execution, and file creation events in executable paths. Investigate outbound connections from the LG Simple Editor host after suspicious requests, especially to rare external IPs or domains. Because exploitation may grant SYSTEM privileges, absence of application errors does not rule out compromise; correlate network requests, file writes, and process execution around the same timestamps.

What your security team should do
- Immediately inventory LG Simple Editor deployments and determine whether any instances are reachable from the internet or broad internal networks.
- Prioritize patching or compensating controls because the vulnerability is unauthenticated, network-exploitable, weaponized, and has a high EPSS score.
- If no fixed version can be confirmed, isolate the service to a restricted management network and block access from untrusted sources.
- Hunt for prior exploitation before and after remediation, focusing on suspicious file writes, traversal strings, unexpected child processes, and SYSTEM-level process execution from LG Simple Editor directories.
- Treat any confirmed exploitation as full host compromise: preserve evidence, remove the host from the network, rotate credentials that may have been exposed, and rebuild from trusted media.
- Add detection coverage for path traversal attempts and unexpected process creation by LG Simple Editor or its underlying web/application service.
- Review adjacent systems for lateral movement if the affected host had access to internal management networks, file shares, domain resources, or signage infrastructure.
The record
LG Simple Editor cp Command Directory Traversal Remote Code Execution Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of LG Simple Editor. Authentication is not required to exploit this vulnerability. The specific flaw exists within the cp command implemented in the makeDetailContent method. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of a user-supplied path prior to using it in file operations. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of SYSTEM. Was ZDI-CAN-19925.
