What it actually does

Out-of-bounds write in the VZT vzt_rd_get_facname decompression prefix copy loop allows arbitrary code execution when a crafted .vzt file is processed.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers can gain full control of engineering workstations that open malicious waveform files, risking theft of hardware designs, disruption of verification workflows, and lateral movement in electronics development environments.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker creates a malformed .vzt file that triggers the out-of-bounds write during decompression; the file is delivered via email or download; the victim opens it in GTKWave; the flaw executes attacker-supplied code. Public exploit code is available.

How to fix it

Upgrade GTKWave to the latest release that resolves the VZT decompression vulnerabilities; avoid opening untrusted .vzt files until patched.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm GTKWave version exceeds the vulnerable release and test that known-good .vzt files open without crashes or unexpected behavior.

Typical attack path

  1. Craft malicious .vzt file exploiting prefix copy loop
  2. Distribute file through phishing or shared repositories
  3. Victim opens file in vulnerable GTKWave
  4. Decompression triggers out-of-bounds write
  5. Attacker payload achieves code execution

How to detect it

Review system and application logs for GTKWave crashes or abnormal child process creation immediately after .vzt file access; inspect recent file-handling activity for unexpected network connections or file writes.

What your security team should do

  • Block opening of .vzt files from untrusted sources via policy or application control
  • Monitor vendor announcements for the official patched release and deploy immediately
  • Scan existing .vzt assets with updated detection rules if available

The record

Multiple out-of-bounds write vulnerabilities exist in the VZT vzt_rd_get_facname decompression functionality of GTKWave 3.3.115. A specially crafted .vzt file can lead to arbitrary code execution. A victim would need to open a malicious file to trigger these vulnerabilities. This vulnerability concerns the out-of-bounds write perfomed by the prefix copy loop.
