What it actually does
Out-of-bounds read in ksmbd when the NetBIOS header length field is not validated against SMB header sizes in ksmbd_conn_handler_loop, allowing memory access beyond intended buffers.
Why it matters to the business
SMB file servers on affected Linux kernels may leak sensitive memory contents or crash under network traffic, disrupting file sharing services with potential data exposure.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker sends crafted NetBIOS/SMB packets over the network where the PDU length mismatches expected SMB structures, triggering the unvalidated pdu_size path to read outside allocated memory.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit d93fa2c78854d25ed4b67ac87f1c3c264d8b27fb or later (6.3.8+). Rebuild and deploy the updated kernel across all affected systems.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel version is 6.3.8 or newer; inspect fs/smb/server/connection.c for the presence of the length validation logic added in the referenced commit.
Typical attack path
- Identify exposed ksmbd SMB ports (typically 445/tcp)
- Craft and transmit NetBIOS frames with manipulated length fields that exceed or mismatch SMB header expectations
- Trigger ksmbd_conn_handler_loop processing to perform the out-of-bounds read
- Observe responses for leaked memory contents or service instability
How to detect it
Review kernel logs and SMB connection logs for ksmbd crashes or warnings around connection handling; look for repeated connections from untrusted sources with unusual packet sizes.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all systems exposing SMB via ksmbd
- Temporarily disable ksmbd if updates cannot be applied immediately
- Monitor network traffic to SMB ports for anomalous PDU sizes
- Review EPSS and KEV status periodically for any change in exploit availability
The record
An issue was discovered in the Linux kernel before 6.3.8. fs/smb/server/connection.c in ksmbd does not validate the relationship between the NetBIOS header's length field and the SMB header sizes, via pdu_size in ksmbd_conn_handler_loop, leading to an out-of-bounds read.
