What it actually does
Improper handling of RTL Arabic characters allows crafted URLs to visually spoof legitimate domains in the address bar, violating input validation expectations and enabling display of misleading navigation targets with high integrity impact.
Why it matters to the business
Users may be misled into interacting with attacker-controlled sites presented as trusted domains, increasing phishing and credential theft risk across browser deployments; low EPSS and absence from KEV indicate limited observed exploitation despite broad Firefox prevalence.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker embeds bidirectional text control characters in a URL so the rendered address bar shows a trusted domain while the actual destination resolves elsewhere; the victim is tricked into proceeding under false visual assumptions without any server-side interaction required.
How to fix it
Upgrade all Firefox installations to version 115 or later; enable automatic updates and verify version numbers centrally where possible.
How to confirm the fix worked
Query browser version strings across the environment to confirm presence of 115 or newer builds; test address bar rendering with known RTL spoofing payloads in updated clients to verify spoofing is prevented.
Typical attack path
- Craft malicious URL containing RTL override characters to reorder displayed text
- Host or deliver the URL via phishing email, malicious site, or social engineering
- Victim clicks link and observes spoofed trusted domain in Firefox address bar
- Victim proceeds with action believing they are on the legitimate site
How to detect it
Review browser history and download logs for unexpected navigation to domains that visually resemble internal or high-value targets; correlate with user reports of unexpected site behavior after clicking external links.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize rollout of Firefox 115+ to all user populations within standard patch windows
- Include browser version checks in existing endpoint compliance scans
- Educate users on verifying URLs through secondary means such as bookmarks or direct typing rather than clicking links
The record
The use of RTL Arabic characters in the address bar may have allowed for URL spoofing. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 115.
