What it actually does

An out-of-bounds write in the LXT2 num_time_table_entries functionality allows arbitrary code execution when a specially crafted .lxt2 file is parsed.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers can gain full control of systems running the affected software if users open malicious waveform files, risking data theft, ransomware deployment, or lateral movement with no vendor patch currently listed.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker creates a malicious .lxt2 file that triggers the out-of-bounds write during parsing of num_time_table_entries. The victim is tricked into opening the file in the vulnerable application, resulting in arbitrary code execution on the local system.

How to fix it

No fixed versions are listed; avoid opening untrusted .lxt2 files and monitor the project for future updates that address the parser flaw.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed version against any future patches, test file handling behavior with known-good and malformed LXT2 samples in a sandbox, and review source code for bounds checks on num_time_table_entries.

Typical attack path

  1. Craft a malicious .lxt2 file that exploits the out-of-bounds write
  2. Distribute the file via email, download link, or shared storage
  3. Victim opens the file using the affected software
  4. Out-of-bounds write occurs leading to arbitrary code execution

How to detect it

Review application and system logs for unexpected process launches or crashes immediately after .lxt2 file access; look for unusual child processes or memory corruption indicators following file open events.

What your security team should do

  • Block or sandbox opening of .lxt2 files from untrusted sources
  • Monitor upstream project for security updates and apply immediately when released
  • Replace the tool with a maintained alternative where possible

The record

An out-of-bounds write vulnerability exists in the LXT2 num_time_table_entries functionality of GTKWave 3.3.115. A specially crafted .lxt2 file can lead to arbitrary code execution. A victim would need to open a malicious file to trigger this vulnerability.
