What it actually does

The flaw permits the Unicode text direction override character in attachment filenames, allowing the client to display an incorrect extension and mask an executable as a document file.

Why it matters to the business

Organizations face elevated risk of users inadvertently executing malware delivered via email, potentially leading to system compromise, data loss, and operational disruption; the issue remains relevant for unpatched older deployments despite low exploitation probability.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts an email attachment whose filename embeds the right-to-left override character to make an executable appear as a document, then sends the message; the recipient sees only the falsified extension and opens the file, executing the payload.

How to fix it

Upgrade Mozilla Thunderbird to version 115.0.1 or 102.13.1 or later on all systems; apply equivalent updates through package managers on Debian and other distributions; configure email clients to display full filenames and block execution of unexpected file types.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify installed Thunderbird version meets or exceeds 115.0.1 or 102.13.1; test by sending an email attachment whose name contains U+202E and confirm the true extension is shown; review client configuration for filename sanitization settings.

Typical attack path

  1. Craft attachment filename containing Unicode direction override to spoof extension
  2. Send email containing the attachment to target users
  3. Recipient views attachment list and opens file believing it is a document
  4. Executable runs and performs malicious actions

How to detect it

Review mail server and client logs for attachment filenames containing right-to-left override or other directional Unicode characters; inspect user-reported incidents involving unexpected executable behavior after opening email attachments; correlate with process execution logs showing document-named files launching as binaries.

  • U+202E in attachment filename
  • filename containing \u202e
  • email attachment extension mismatch due to directional override

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching all Thunderbird instances to the fixed releases
  • Deploy endpoint controls that prevent execution of files with mismatched extensions
  • Update user awareness training to emphasize verifying file types before opening attachments
  • Monitor for any remaining legacy deployments and enforce upgrade timelines

The record

Thunderbird allowed the Text Direction Override Unicode Character in filenames. An email attachment could be incorrectly shown as being a document file, while in fact it was an executable file. Newer versions of Thunderbird will strip the character and show the correct file extension. This vulnerability affects Thunderbird < 115.0.1 and Thunderbird < 102.13.1.
