What it actually does
Memory corruption in the kernel while parsing metadata allows local attackers to corrupt kernel memory structures, potentially leading to arbitrary code execution with kernel privileges.
Why it matters to the business
Devices using affected Qualcomm wireless and home platforms could be fully compromised by local attackers, resulting in loss of control, data exposure, and disruption of wireless or embedded operations; with over 1000 days since disclosure and no listed fixes, exposure remains widespread across the Qualcomm ecosystem.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access crafts malicious metadata and supplies it to the kernel parser on an affected Qualcomm device, triggering memory corruption that can be leveraged for privilege escalation or code execution within the kernel.
How to fix it
Apply the latest Qualcomm firmware updates for all affected products including csr8811, wcn6750, wcn685x, wcn785x, immersive home platforms, and ipq5010 as soon as vendor patches become available; until then restrict local access and monitor for kernel anomalies.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify firmware versions against Qualcomm security bulletins, re-test metadata parsing paths after updates, and confirm absence of the vulnerable kernel code paths through binary or version checks.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local access or execute code as a low-privileged user on the target Qualcomm device
- Prepare and deliver specially crafted metadata to the kernel component responsible for parsing
- Trigger the memory corruption condition during parsing
- Exploit the resulting corruption to execute arbitrary code or escalate privileges
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and crash reports for unexpected memory faults or corruption during metadata parsing on Qualcomm platforms; correlate with process activity that interacts with wireless or firmware subsystems.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize firmware updates for all listed Qualcomm components as soon as released
- Limit local user access on affected devices until patched
- Incorporate Qualcomm kernel metadata parsing into vulnerability scanning processes
- Review device logs for unexpected kernel faults or metadata handling errors
