What it actually does

Race condition in ksmbd due to missing locking during SMB2_SESSION_SETUP and SMB2_LOGOFF command processing allows an attacker to corrupt kernel objects and execute arbitrary code in kernel context.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker establishes an SMB connection and issues concurrent SMB2_SESSION_SETUP and SMB2_LOGOFF requests that race on shared session objects, bypassing intended locking to trigger a use-after-free or similar corruption that yields kernel code execution.

How to fix it

Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 5729a900a07b7f166b94577c543d44c4c42e5ec3 or later; if ksmbd is not required, disable the module entirely via kernel configuration.

Verify the running kernel git commit or version string contains 5729a900a07b7f166b94577c543d44c4c42e5ec3; confirm ksmbd module is absent or kernel source lacks the vulnerable session-handling paths.

2. Send overlapping SMB2_SESSION_SETUP and SMB2_LOGOFF commands in rapid succession

How to detect it

Inspect SMB server logs and kernel audit trails for bursts of SESSION_SETUP combined with LOGOFF requests from the same connection; correlate with any subsequent kernel oops or unexpected module loads.
