What it actually does

Remote code execution via creation of a malicious .php log file in the language folder followed by execution of a crafted payload that escalates privileges to run arbitrary commands.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers can take complete control of affected systems, potentially leading to data theft, service disruption, or further network compromise; the flaw has been public for over two years with no observed exploitation but still requires prompt patching across all pimcore deployments.

How an attack unfolds

An unauthenticated attacker submits a request that writes a PHP file containing a payload into the language log directory, then triggers the file through a subsequent request to execute system commands and gain elevated privileges on the host.

How to fix it

Upgrade pimcore/pimcore to version 5.3.0 or later; verify that the language folder permissions prevent creation of executable files by untrusted users; apply the fix across all instances before the next maintenance window.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed pimcore version is 5.3.0 or newer; attempt to create a test .php file in the language directory and verify it is rejected or non-executable; review application logs for any prior attempts to write PHP files to that location.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify a reachable pimcore instance running a version before 5.3.0
  2. Craft and send a request that creates a .php file in the language folder containing executable code
  3. Trigger execution of the newly created file via a follow-up request
  4. Escalate privileges to obtain arbitrary command execution on the underlying operating system

How to detect it

Search web server and application logs for POST or GET requests that reference language folder paths ending in .php; look for file creation events in the language directory; examine process execution logs for unexpected PHP or shell commands originating from the web application user.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately schedule upgrade of all pimcore instances to 5.3.0
  • Restrict write permissions on the language log directory to prevent PHP file creation
  • Add web application firewall rules to block requests that attempt to write .php files to language paths
  • Monitor for any post-upgrade anomalies in application behavior

The record

RCE (Remote Code Execution) exists in ZoneMinder through 1.36.33 as an attacker can create a new .php log file in language folder, while executing a crafted payload and escalate privileges allowing execution of any commands on the remote system.
