What it actually does

Improper access control allows an authenticated local user to bypass restrictions and escalate privileges on the affected Intel Optane PMem software.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers who already have limited local access could gain full control over memory management functions, leading to data tampering, service disruption, or further compromise of the host system; the large number of days since disclosure increases exposure risk for unpatched deployments.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker obtains a low-privileged local account on a system running vulnerable Optane PMem software, then abuses the missing access controls to execute privileged operations that should be restricted, ultimately achieving higher privileges without needing remote access or additional authentication.

How to fix it

Upgrade Intel Optane PMem software to version 01.00.00.3547 or later, 02.00.00.3915 or later, or 03.00.00.0483 or later depending on the installed branch; verify the update through vendor release notes and restart affected services.

How to confirm the fix worked

Query installed software versions against the fixed thresholds; confirm that the access control checks now correctly enforce privilege boundaries by reviewing release notes and running vendor-provided validation utilities.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local authenticated access to the target system
  2. Identify presence of vulnerable Optane PMem software versions
  3. Trigger the improper access control path via local API or utility calls
  4. Escalate to higher privileges and perform unauthorized actions

How to detect it

Review local authentication and privilege change events in system logs around the time of suspected access; look for unexpected use of Optane PMem management utilities by non-administrative accounts.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately inventory all systems using Intel Optane PMem software and schedule upgrades to the specified fixed versions
  • Restrict local user accounts to the minimum required privileges until patches are applied
  • Monitor vendor advisories for any follow-on updates given the extended time since disclosure

The record

Improper access control in some Intel(R) Optane(TM) PMem software before versions 01.00.00.3547, 02.00.00.3915, 03.00.00.0483 may allow an athenticated user to potentially enable escalation of privilege via local access.
