What it actually does
Out-of-bounds physical memory access in io_sqe_buffer_register within io_uring/rsrc.c allows a local process to read or write kernel memory beyond registered buffer limits.
Why it matters to the business
Local users can gain full root privileges on affected Linux systems, enabling complete system takeover, data theft, or persistence; widespread kernel exposure increases urgency for patching across servers and endpoints.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with a local account crafts malicious io_uring submission queue entries that trigger registration of a fixed buffer, causing the kernel to access memory past the buffer end; this is leveraged to corrupt kernel structures and escalate to root.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to a version containing the fix for io_sqe_buffer_register; apply vendor-supplied kernel packages as soon as available. Where immediate patching is not possible, restrict untrusted local accounts and consider disabling io_uring via kernel command line where functionality permits.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify kernel version after update matches or exceeds the fixed release; confirm io_uring buffer registration logic no longer permits out-of-bounds access through code review or vendor-supplied test suites; scan systems for presence of vulnerable io_uring code paths.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local shell access on target system
- Load or compile code using io_uring interfaces
- Submit specially sized or offset buffer registration requests via io_uring
- Trigger out-of-bounds read/write to corrupt kernel memory
- Escalate privileges to root and execute arbitrary code
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for io_uring related oops or warnings; inspect process activity using io_uring syscalls; correlate with unexpected privilege changes or new root processes.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all internet-facing and multi-user systems due to local privilege escalation risk
- Audit local user accounts and limit io_uring access via seccomp or LSM policies where possible
- Monitor for new exploit code releases given the kernel attack surface
The record
A flaw was found in the fixed buffer registration code for io_uring (io_sqe_buffer_register in io_uring/rsrc.c) in the Linux kernel that allows out-of-bounds access to physical memory beyond the end of the buffer. This flaw enables full local privilege escalation.
