What it actually does
Use-after-free condition in WebCore::RenderLayer::renderer allows an attacker to access freed memory during rendering, enabling arbitrary code execution in the process context.
Why it matters to the business
Systems relying on WebKitGTK for web content rendering face risk of remote compromise, which can lead to data theft, system takeover, or disruption of dependent applications and services.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts a malicious webpage or document that triggers the use-after-free in the rendering engine when processed by an affected WebKitGTK instance; the freed renderer object is then reused to inject and execute attacker-controlled code.
How to fix it
Upgrade WebKitGTK to version 2.36.8 or later; rebuild and redeploy any dependent applications; apply vendor patches as they become available.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify installed WebKitGTK version meets or exceeds 2.36.8; review release notes for the fix; test rendering of known trigger content in a controlled environment.
Typical attack path
- Craft and host malicious web content targeting the renderer flaw
- Lure victim into loading the content via browser or WebKit-based application
- Trigger use-after-free during page rendering
- Achieve arbitrary code execution and establish persistence or exfiltrate data
How to detect it
Review process crash logs and memory dumps for renderer-related faults; correlate unusual process behavior or network activity originating from WebKitGTK-based applications with known exploit timelines.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize upgrade of WebKitGTK across all affected systems
- Inventory applications and libraries that depend on WebKitGTK
- Monitor upstream WebKit and distribution security feeds for additional fixes
- Restrict rendering of untrusted web content where feasible
The record
A use-after-free vulnerability in WebCore::RenderLayer::renderer in WebKitGTK before 2.36.8 allows attackers to execute code remotely.
