What it actually does
This is a network-accessible cross-site scripting vulnerability requiring user interaction. An unauthenticated attacker can craft a malicious URL or page that causes JavaScript to execute in a victim’s browser in the security context of the affected web application. Because the CVSS scope is changed, successful exploitation can cross the boundary between the attacker-controlled content and the trusted application session, potentially exposing session data, anti-CSRF tokens, user-visible sensitive information, or allowing actions to be performed with the victim’s privileges. The provided product metadata lists magento/community-edition as affected, while the description references Citrix ADC and Citrix Gateway; organizations should validate product applicability against their asset inventory and vendor advisories.
Why it matters to the business
If exploited, this flaw can let an attacker abuse trusted web sessions, impersonate users in limited ways, steal sensitive information visible in the browser, or manipulate application workflows. Internet-facing administrative, commerce, or gateway portals are higher risk because exploitation can be delivered through phishing, links, redirects, or injected content. The vulnerability is old enough to be broadly known, has weaponized exploit maturity, and has a high EPSS score of 0.80907, meaning security teams should treat exposure as urgent even though it is not currently listed in CISA KEV and is not marked as ransomware-associated.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker first identifies an exposed instance of the affected web application or gateway and determines whether a vulnerable endpoint reflects attacker-controlled input into an HTML, JavaScript, URL, or attribute context without proper encoding. The attacker then builds a URL or HTML lure containing a JavaScript payload. A victim is induced to open the link, visit a page, follow a redirect, or otherwise interact with the crafted content while authenticated to the affected application. When the vulnerable page renders, the browser executes the attacker-supplied script as if it came from the trusted application. The script can read accessible page content, capture tokens or form data, modify displayed content, trigger application actions available to the victim, or exfiltrate data to attacker-controlled infrastructure. In a typical real-world campaign, exploitation is paired with phishing or social engineering and may be followed by account takeover attempts, administrative action abuse, or further lateral movement depending on the victim’s role and session privileges.
How to fix it
Upgrade affected packages to a fixed release. For the supplied affected package, upgrade magento/community-edition to one of the fixed versions appropriate for the deployed branch: 2.4.4-p6, 2.4.5-p5, 2.4.6-p3, or 2.4.7-beta2 or later. If the environment also includes Citrix ADC or Citrix Gateway matching the CVE description, verify vendor advisories and apply the relevant Citrix fixed builds. Where immediate upgrade is not possible, reduce exposure by restricting administrative and sensitive portals to trusted networks or VPNs, enforcing MFA, applying web application firewall rules that block reflected XSS payloads, disabling unnecessary public access, and hardening response headers such as Content-Security-Policy, X-Content-Type-Options, and HttpOnly/Secure/SameSite cookie attributes. Mitigations should be treated as temporary; patching remains the primary fix.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the deployed software version is at or above the fixed release for its branch: magento/community-edition 2.4.4-p6, 2.4.5-p5, 2.4.6-p3, 2.4.7-beta2, or later. Validate the asset-to-CVE mapping because the supplied description references Citrix ADC and Citrix Gateway while the package metadata references Magento Community Edition. For web applications, perform a safe validation by sending benign encoded test strings through previously vulnerable parameters and confirming they are HTML-encoded, JavaScript-encoded, rejected, or otherwise rendered inert rather than executed. Review HTTP responses for correct output encoding and security headers. Run an authenticated and unauthenticated vulnerability scan using current signatures, but do not rely solely on scanner output; confirm software versions and vendor advisory applicability. If a WAF rule is used as a compensating control, test that requests containing common XSS payload patterns are blocked or logged without disrupting legitimate traffic.
Typical attack path
- Discover an internet-facing affected application or gateway and identify a parameter or request path that reflects user-controlled input.
- Test whether special characters and HTML/JavaScript payloads are returned unsafely in the response.
- Craft a malicious URL, redirect, form, or embedded page containing a JavaScript payload.
- Deliver the lure to a user through phishing, messaging, malicious advertising, compromised content, or another trusted channel.
- Victim opens the crafted link or page while authenticated to the affected service.
- Browser executes attacker-controlled JavaScript in the trusted application context.
- Attacker harvests accessible session data, page content, tokens, or performs actions available to the victim.
- Attacker uses stolen data or abused session actions for fraud, privilege abuse, persistence, or follow-on compromise.
How to detect it
To determine whether this was already exploited, review web server, reverse proxy, WAF, CDN, load balancer, and application logs for requests containing encoded or raw JavaScript/HTML payloads in URLs, query parameters, POST bodies, headers, referrers, and redirect parameters. Focus on requests that returned HTTP 200 or 3xx responses and were followed by unusual authenticated activity from the same user, source IP, session, or user agent. Look for signs of phishing delivery, including unusual referrers, shortened URLs, unexpected external origins, and repeated payload testing from scanning infrastructure. Review browser telemetry, EDR web history, and proxy logs for users visiting crafted links to trusted application domains followed by outbound connections to unknown domains. Investigate application audit logs for unexpected profile changes, administrative actions, API key creation, password resets, checkout/payment configuration changes, content changes, or permission changes shortly after suspicious requests. If Content Security Policy reporting is enabled, search CSP violation reports for blocked inline script execution or exfiltration attempts. Because XSS exploitation often leaves little server-side evidence beyond the malicious request itself, correlate suspicious web requests with user session activity and outbound browser traffic.

What your security team should do
- Prioritize remediation for internet-facing instances because the exploit is weaponized and the EPSS score is high.
- Validate whether the affected estate includes magento/community-edition, Citrix ADC, Citrix Gateway, or both, due to conflicting product metadata in the supplied record.
- Upgrade magento/community-edition to 2.4.4-p6, 2.4.5-p5, 2.4.6-p3, 2.4.7-beta2, or later, based on the deployed branch.
- For any applicable Citrix ADC or Citrix Gateway deployments, check vendor guidance and apply the relevant fixed build immediately.
- Add temporary WAF detections and blocks for reflected XSS payloads while patching is in progress.
- Restrict access to administrative portals and sensitive application paths to trusted networks where possible.
- Review authentication, session, and administrative activity logs for signs of suspicious user actions following visits to crafted URLs.
- Harden cookies with HttpOnly, Secure, and SameSite attributes and deploy a restrictive Content-Security-Policy where compatible.
- Search historical web access logs for XSS payload indicators and outbound connections to unfamiliar domains immediately after suspicious requests.
- Educate help desk and user-facing teams to report suspicious links involving trusted application domains.
