What it actually does
Use-after-free in the Linux kernel io_uring subsystem caused by duplicate fput calls on error paths in io_install_fixed_file and callers, resulting in reference count underflow and a freed file object that can be reused for arbitrary code execution.
Why it matters to the business
Local attackers can escalate to root privileges on affected Linux systems, enabling full system compromise, data exfiltration, or persistence; kernel updates are required across all distributions using vulnerable io_uring code, with moderate urgency given available exploits but no widespread ransomware or KEV listing.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local shell access crafts a sequence of io_uring operations that force error handling in io_install_fixed_file, triggering the double-fput and UAF; the freed file structure is then groomed and reused to overwrite function pointers or credentials for privilege escalation to root.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 9d94c04c0db024922e886c9fd429659f22f48ea4 or later; rebuild and reboot all affected systems; where immediate patching is not feasible, restrict untrusted local access and disable io_uring via kernel command-line parameter if operationally acceptable.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the running kernel git commit or version string includes 9d94c04c0db024922e886c9fd429659f22f48ea4; compile and execute test programs that exercise io_install_fixed_file error paths to confirm absence of the UAF condition; review kernel changelog for the referenced fix.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local unprivileged shell access on target Linux host
- Load or invoke io_uring subsystem operations that hit error paths in fixed-file installation
- Trigger reference underflow to free the file object while still referenced
- Reuse the dangling pointer via heap grooming to execute attacker-controlled code
- Escalate privileges and establish persistence or lateral movement
How to detect it
Review system and audit logs for anomalous io_uring syscall sequences followed by unexpected privilege changes; inspect process creation events showing uid transitions from non-root to root without sudo; correlate with crash dumps or kernel oops messages referencing io_uring file structures.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all internet-facing and multi-user Linux systems within the next patch cycle
- Audit and restrict local user accounts that can execute untrusted code
- Enable kernel lockdown or seccomp filters to limit io_uring usage where feasible
- Monitor vulnerability disclosure feeds for backported fixes in distribution kernels
The record
A use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux Kernel io_uring subsystem can be exploited to achieve local privilege escalation. Both io_install_fixed_file and its callers call fput in a file in case of an error, causing a reference underflow which leads to a use-after-free vulnerability. We recommend upgrading past commit 9d94c04c0db024922e886c9fd429659f22f48ea4.
