What it actually does
Local high-privileged attacker on the host can exploit a flaw in the VirtualBox core component to read all accessible VM data and trigger complete denial of service; the attack crosses scope boundaries to affect additional products on the system.
Why it matters to the business
Virtualization hosts running affected 7.0.x releases face risk of data exposure from guest environments and unplanned outages that can disrupt multiple workloads until the host is updated.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with administrative login to the physical or hypervisor host where VirtualBox 7.0.x executes uses the local session to trigger the core flaw, bypassing isolation to read guest data and force repeated crashes of the VirtualBox process, with side effects on other products running on the same host.
How to fix it
Upgrade Oracle VM VirtualBox to version 7.0.12 or later on all affected hosts; apply the update through official Oracle channels and restart running VMs after installation.
How to confirm the fix worked
Query the installed VirtualBox version with 'VBoxManage --version' and confirm it reports 7.0.12 or higher; re-test a representative VM to verify normal operation and absence of the prior crash behavior.
Typical attack path
- Obtain high-privileged local account on the host running VirtualBox 7.0.x
- Execute crafted input against the VirtualBox core component
- Read arbitrary VM memory or disk contents
- Trigger repeated process crashes to achieve denial of service
- Leverage scope change to impact additional co-located products
How to detect it
Review host authentication logs for unexpected privileged sessions around the time of VM instability; inspect VirtualBox process crash dumps or repeated restarts in system logs; correlate any anomalous file or memory access originating from the VirtualBox process.
What your security team should do
- Immediately inventory all hosts running VirtualBox 7.0.x and schedule upgrades to 7.0.12
- Restrict interactive logons on virtualization hosts to the minimum required personnel
- Monitor vendor advisories for any follow-on patches in the 7.0 series
- Validate backups of critical VMs before applying the update
The record
Vulnerability in the Oracle VM VirtualBox product of Oracle Virtualization (component: Core). Supported versions that are affected are Prior to 7.0.12. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows high privileged attacker with logon to the infrastructure where Oracle VM VirtualBox executes to compromise Oracle VM VirtualBox. While the vulnerability is in Oracle VM VirtualBox, attacks may significantly impact additional products (scope change). Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized access to critical data or complete access to all Oracle VM VirtualBox accessible data and unauthorized ability to cause a hang or frequently repeatable crash (complete DOS) of Oracle VM VirtualBox. Note: Only applicable to 7.0.x platform. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 7.9 (Confidentiality and Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:N/A:H).
